BUBONIC PLAGUE
FIVE NEW CASES REPORTED. BRISBANE, October 4. Of 68 rats examined in Brisbane one was found to be infected. A second death from plague is reported at Townsville, the victim being a barmaid. October 6. A third victim of the plague in Townsville has succumbed. October 7. A fourth case of plague was reported in the city on Wednesday. Two additional cases of plague are reported—one at Rocklea and the other at Townsville. The Home Secretary has announced that the Commonwealth Government was without supplies of plague curative serum. It had applied to the State authorities for cultures of local cases from which to manufacture serum. It is assumed therefore that the cases which had already occurred had not been treated with scrum. SYDNEY, October 3. The only local plague development haa been the capture of a rat on the wharf in the vicinity of the previous captures made. The authorities are hopeful that the present cordon will prove effective.
