Miss Milliccnt Woodward, holder of ihe European typewriting championship, was beaten in a 60 minutes’ test by .Mr R. CF Cm tis. The contest, which was for £SO a side, was carried out at the Manchester Ktfieietu-v Kxhihiiion. The n-st consisted of 60 minutes’ copying from printed matter, previously unseen, and 10 words were deducted for every error. Mr Curtis won bv a margin of .18 words a. minute at an average -peed of 80.1 words a minute after deihi't ion; for errors. After Ibe contest, which w: s watched by about 0600 people, Miss Windward challenged Mr Curtis to a eontel in London three moiiihs hence for £IOO a side, and the challenge was accepted. Of 2400 sealed bottles containing .messages and released round the Bril tali coast during the year 1920, 290 were recovered up to' December.
