SCALING EVEREST
BASE CAMP ESTABLISHED. LONDON, September 24. A despatch from the Mount Everest Expedition, dated Kharta, September l, states that after fruitless reconnaissances to find an approach, Messrs Bullock. Moors heel, and Mallory followed the Kharta \ alley towards the source of the river. They experienced the greatest difficulty in travelling, owing to the snow, which was knee-deep. The party reached a col at a height of 23,000 ft, facing the north ridge of Mount Everest, a mile away across a glacier. They decided that it was possible to reach the’northern ridge from tne valley, but the warm weather and the sort snow rendered an immediate advance impossible.
