Friday evening. Dr and Mrs Fulton gave a small and very enjoyable dance on Thursday evening, September Ist, at their residence, Pitt street, for their daughter, Miss Gweneth Fulton. INVERCARGILL, September 10. Mrs T. F. Macdonald went to Queenstown last week. Mrs B. Lcepor is also spending a short holiday at Queenstown. Miss E. M‘Lean is the guest of Miss Broderick. Miss Lousely spent the week-end at Dunedin. Miss N. Thorn-son and Miss E. Field have gone to Stewart Island for a short holiday. Mrs C. J. Broderick has gone to visit her sister, Mrs A. Stocker, in North Canterbury. Mrs Dale gave a very enjoyable picture party at the Civic last week in honour of Miss Provo, who is to be married shortly. She afterwards entertained, them at supper at her home in Don street. Mrs T. D. Pearce and family have gone to Riverton for the holidays. Mrs R. Anderson and Miss K. Anderson returned from Christchurch this week. Mr and Mrs W. Wadsworth returned from their trip to Australia this week. Mrs W. Wadsworth is staying with her father, Mr W. Henderson, Tweed street. Mrs J. M‘Gregor, Mt Linton, gave a most enjoyable dance this week in honour of her girls being home from school. Some of the guests motored from Invercargill, while others rode many miles from tire surrounding country. Among her guests were Mis Livingstone, Mrs H. Macdonald, Mrs Macdonald (Bowmont), Misses Bowler (Gore), Metzer, J. Rodger, Wylie, K, Hazlett, M. Royds, Macdonald. Gilchrist, Messrs Spate, M'Leun, Boyd, Metzer, Marshall, Pears, Hodgkins, Macdonald, Chalmers, Roe, Anderson, and Wilding. Miss Helen Prain has gene to Auckland for a holiday. Mrs F. Handy side and her two children have returned from Wellington, where they have been spending some months holiday. Mr Tom Wright left for aWnganui this | week. Mrs T. S. Mr and Mrs Kerr (Manila) are spendingsome months in Timaru. Mr and Mrs Bridgewater (Preston street) are spending a fortnight at Iho West Coast. Mrs Culfibert Hamer (Christchurch) is staying with Mrs Orbell, Highfield. Colonel and Mrs Fisher leave this week for their new home in Palmerston North.

Mrs Hampton Rhodes, “Elmwood,” was hostess at a most enjoyable “At home,” at which she entertained a number of friends, each 01 whom gave a donation to augment the proceeds of Violet Day. Bridge was played in the drawing room, and a delightful supper was served in the dining room, the lights being shaded in yellow and the table decorated with crystal bowls of daffodils. Mrs Jack Beckett and family are staying at the fishing huts, Rakaia. Professor and Mrs Shelly have returned from a visit to Timaru. Miss Marjorie de Castro (Blenheim) is visiting Christchurch, and staying at Khartoum. Mrs and Miss Jellet are visiting Rakaia. Mrs Dampier Crassly is visiting Timaru. A very quiet wedding was solemnised at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church one morning during the week, when Mr Justice Herdman was married to Mrs Alice Brown, of Aikman's road, Merivale, the Rev. J. The West Coast Competition Society is to be congratulated upon the success that attended its efforts, the number of entries easily constituting a. record. The Judges were Messis J. F. Montague, and S. Williamson. both of whom carried out their duties to the evident satisfaction of committee and competitors alike. Keen interest was maintained by the public, who crowded the hall at both sessions. The musical section was unfortunately weak, there bring very few entries in that class. Mr Mill'umson suggested the advisability of introducing children’s singing at future competitions, winch would hefp the musical portion, as many would loss interest if music, both vocal and instrumental, was to be entirely outclassed bv the elocutionary element. Oieymou'h was once very proud of its reputat on for bein f * - a very musical town; unfortunately that "cannot evidently be claimed for it now ind<rin°- by the number of competitors who face"! The musical judge, whose criticisms have always been impartial and of great value to those receiving them. . , , Mr I F Montague (elocutionary fudge) and Mr Sidney Williamson (musical judge) left this morning by the Otira expi-ess.
