NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE ESSAY COMPETITION.
During the war very exhaustive researches concerning the action of alcohol upon the human body and mind were undertaken by the British Medical Research Council at the request of the Liquor Control Board. These researches were mainly prompted by the necessity for maximum efficiency being as JO red in the production of munitions. The fruits of these researches, blended with the results of previous exhaustive scientific investigation, have been summarised and embodied in Special Education Report No. 13, entitled “Alcohol and the Human Body and Mind,” issued by the education authorities as a syllabus for instruction on this subject to be given in all the State schools. It is a matter for congratulation that New Zealand has probably the most up-to-date syllabus in existence for school instruction on this subject. The New Zealand Alliance, with a view to stimulating interest amongst scholars, students, and the general public, has arranged a competition in which cash prizes are offered for essays written after a study of this Special Educat'on Report No. 13. The competition is divided into senior, intermediate, and junior groups. The length of the essays must not exceed 5000 words in the senior and 3000 words in the intermediate group. Awards will he made by independent judges according to the quality of the essays, no names or addresses appearing on the essays. The total amount of prizes in these two groups is £345. Every applicant for conditions of competition will receive a copy of the Special Education Report No. 13. Entries close on December 31 next. There are no charges and no entry fees. Full conditions of competition can be obtained by addressing requests to the Competition Secretary, Box 1079, Wellington.
