TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting was presided over by Mr Walter Blackie (chairman). Before proceeding with the ordinary business, Cr Blair moved —“ That the council convey its deepest sympathy 1o the chairman in his bereavement sustained in tho death of his daughter (Mrs Stevenson).” —The motion was carried, the members standing in silence.—The clerk was instructed to convey sympathy to Mr Stevenson. Tli© Finance Committee reported that the expenditure for the month was £941 7s Id, and recommended that the accounts be passed for payment. The receipts for the past five weeks had amounted to £1352 lls 4d. The bank book shewed a credit balance of £1360 18s Od.—Adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported a practice of several people in leaving dead animals lying about their paddocks, in some instances quite close to the public roads. He had had to deal with sever?)l cases of this nature during the month. —Received. The Ranger stated that lie had impounded 17 head of cattle during the month, and lie reported a common practice of persons cutting willows on the bank of the Silvers! re am and allowing the branches to fall into- the stream. Two blockages had occurred in the stream, willow branches collecting below the railway bridge. These had been removed by the surfacemen.—Received. The Westland County Council asked the council to consider a resolution urging the Government to increase the proposed subsidy to hospital boards in regard to- local contributions from contributing authorities. Received. The Department cf Public Health Dunedin notified that Inspector W. M. Armour with headquarters at Dunedin had been allotted to work tit© council’s area. ll© would make periodical inspections of premises generally, and would attend to all sanitary and other such matters which the council might refer to him. —Noted. The Otago Education Beard notified the council that the election of three managers of the Dunedin Technical School would beheld in September, and asked the council to appoint a member of the Electing C-oni-miltee.—The chairman was appointed. The Post and Telegraph Department wrote stating that owing to the encroachment of hedges on the Wingatni-North Taieri road, tiro new telephone line —to keep clear cf all obstruction—had to V' erected well out from the fence line.—Received. Michael O’Neill, Bush read, Mosgiel, applied for the hire of the county road scoop.— Request granted on the usual conditions. The Town Clerk, Green Island, forwarded a copy of a resolution carried by representatives from tho Taieri County Council, Dunedin City Council, Green Island Borough Council, and the Otago Motor Club: — “That these public bodies carry cut the work of widening Look-out Point road, cost to he borne as follows: Government £250. Green Island Borough Council £IOO, Dunedin City, Taieri County, and Motor Club £SO each.”— It was resolved that tho Taieri County contribute nothing towards the work. C. O. Flamank (Pukevanga) made application to have the mod from Bare wood Homestead to his property formed. Referred to the engineer for report. The chairman and clerk will represent the council at the- Conference of the New Zealand Counties' Association, which will be hold at Wellington. Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. (Dunedin) drew attention to the very bad state of tho road after passing MTTurdyks land, and the gate across the road to Ghidbrook. The read required re-grading.—Consideration deferred. D. C. Kidd (Middlemareh') asked that the road to- his property be formed.—Consideration deferred. The Eketahuna Cc-unty Council wrote regarding tli© collection of rates from assisted soldier settlers.—The council decided to support tli© resolution. W alter Grieve (North Taieri) wrote notifying his intention to put in iron tanks filled with gravel to act as weirs in the Silverstream. and at the same time to plant willows to protect the banks on his property. He asked permission to- hang a swinging gate halfway down the blind road leading from Milner’s corner towards tli© Silverstream.—Granted on usual conditions. The Chairman cf the Maungatua Dairy Factory Company applied for improvement to the road leading to the dairy factory entrance.—One truck of metal granted. The Dunedin City Corporation forwarded) an estimate for the formation of a bridle track as a continuation of the track fronting Hiss Dod’s subdivision in Ha pooka avenue. —No funds available at present. J. E. Jones (Brighton) applied for permission to cultivate the piece of road near Mr A. Douglas’s property.—Granted during the pleasure cf the council. Miss M. Deakcr (Sutton) drew attention to the bad state o-f the road on Poplar Grove, opposite Mr James Kirkland’s residence and kpr own property.—Referred to the member for tho riding for report. Thomas M'Clintock, jun (Middlemareh), asked permission to cart a few load of soil that had been cleaned out of the water-table to fill in a hollow in his section. —Granted; work to be done in conjunction with the surfaceman. It was resolved to purchase birds’ beads Midi eggs as usual at 2d per dozen.
