ILL-TREATING A CHILD.

HEAVY FINE INFLICTED. CARTERTON, August 24. Mrs Adelaide M. E. Wallis appeared at the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of illtreating a child from the Wellington Receiving Home. She had seven children from the home. The child’s head was severely cut. also an arm was cut and tho bodv bruised. Medical and other evidence was called. Two visiting nurses connected with the home gave Mrs Wallis a good name. They considered her n fit and proper person to take charge of children. The Magistrate (Mr S. L. P. Free) held that Mrs Wallis had been unwarrantably severe on the child. lie was loth to send a woman occupying a responsible position to gaol : therefore he had decided to convict the defendant and to inflict a fine of £2O, to be paid within 21 days.
