WEEK'S MINING NEWS

August 16. The Rise and Shine dredge, which had been under repair for a week, recommenced work at midnight on Sunday. August 19. The Waihi Gold Mining Company for the period ended August 6 treated 13,950 tons of ore fo-r a return of 4033 ounces of gold, 42,084 ounces of silver. In the corresponding period of 1920, 13,443 tons yielded 3909 ounces of geld and 23,180 ounces of silver, valued at £24,835. August 20. The Waihi Grand Junction Mining Company for the period ended August 0 treated 5570 tens of ore for 15580 z of gold, and 45410 zof silver. Last year tons of ore returned gold and silver valued at £IO,IBB. August 22. The Rise and Shine dredge, 240 z 6dwt, for 135 hours’ dredging. DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE. Government debentures have received more attention than usual during the present week and have figured largely in the sales list. Three Soldiers’ Settlement Loan bonds changed owners on Thursday at £92 ss, and 1938 inscribed stock was also sold that day for £B3 123 Gd, in each case at ruling prices. Inscribed Soldiers’ Bonds found buyers earlier in the week at £92 2s 6d and £92, and 1938 War Bonds at £B3 12s 6d. Bank of New Zealand shares have been fairly active, and c considerable number have changed hands either at 4Ss 9d or 495. Closing quotations were 49s and 49s 3cl. National Banks are easier. Union Banks had two reported sales at £l2 ss, and have been in demand sine© at the same price. Ot insurance stocks, Nationals have firmed steadily and now stand at 645. South British Insurances are firm on last week’s prices, and have had business at 35s 6i and 35s 9d. New Zealand Insurance shares have also received a fair share of attention, and have been the means of business on more than on© occasion at 29s 3d. Standards have been in steady demand at. 51s, but sellers have been off the market. A parcel of Huddart, Parker shares have had sales from 45s to 44s 6i, but shipping stocks generally a;c of course dull. A stray line of old Union Steam (preference) found a buyer at 18s. Westport Coals were handled early in the week at 27s 3d, and along with Westport-Stocktons show no change from recent values. Tlie latter showed signs of activity, several sales being transacted at 7s Id and 7s. but have since been quiet. Sevej al industrial stocks have had inquiry a*. : rni prices, but sellers have been more prominent than buyers, and business lia-s limited. Prices generally show little if fluctuation, but National Mortgages and Wilson’s Cement shares have hardened; the former to about 725, ai t the latter to 16s. The only business produced by the mining market was in Mount Lye 11 shares at 14s. The week closed without adding to the record oi business except lor reported sales of New Zealand Insurances at 29s 3d and of Bank of New South Wales stock at £35 16a.
