MOROCCAN REBELLION

RECRUITING IN LONDON. LONDON, August 17. The Star states that the Spanish Consulate in London is enrolling volunteers for a foreign legion for fighting the Mooes and the Riffs in Morocco. The news was circulated among ex-service men in the Young Men’s Christian Association headquarters, and brought a rush of applicants. Volunteers a. re not asked for characters, but merely “ Can you fight?” They are paid £25 on enlistment, and are to receive payment of 3s 9d per day. A transport which is lying at Southampton will take the first draft during the weekend. Many of the unemployed are enlisting, and are walking to Southampton to embark, urged thereto by dire necessity. August 18. There were remarkable scenes before the Spanish Consulate, Bloomsbury, where thousands of unemployed men assembled to seek enlistment in the Spanish Foreign Legion. The men were angered at their delay in gaining admission to the Consulate, ami looked like storming the building. The police were compelled to disperse them. The Consul was agitated over the rush, and accepted only 10 men. No married men were taken. It is reported that four British vessels have reached Mel ilia, carrying British war material for Spain. THE BRIGAND KAISULI. LONDON, August 18. The Tangier correspondent of The Times reports that the Spaniards and Riff tribesmen are bidding for the support of the brigand Raisuli. The victorious Riffs are marching on Raisuli'e mountain stronghold, announcing that they will destroy him if he aids Spain. The latter promises to make him ruler of Spanish Morocco if he fights for Spain. Raisuli attacked a Spanish force, but it is known that he is willing to attack the tribesmen if he is appointed Sultan. The Foreign Legion has begun to advance near Melilla. and have secured some preliminary successes.
