LONDON, August 17. In the House of Commons, the Secretary for Air stated that the Air Ministry said he was aware that Hawker had been suffering from tuberculosis, but the result of an examination in December, 1920, justified a renewal of his license. This expired in June, 1921, and Hawker at the time of his death was flying without a license. The Air Ministry is offering three prizes totalling £2OOO for a- design for a safety aeroplane fuel tank, capable of withstanding crashes. CAIRO, August 16. An aeroplane conveying General Newman, Chief of the General Staff in Egypt, crashed at Heliopolis. The pilot was killed. General Newman’s recovery is doubtful.
