RIOT IN TIMBER YARD.
TIMBER STOCK ON FIRE. LONDON, August 8. Serious rioting occurred at Gliksten’s - timber yard in East London, the largest timber yard in England. Five thousand unemployed, many of whom waited all i night 10-ng, came in response to an ad- ! vertisement for 50 men. They were so angered at their failure to secure work that they broke the gates and raided the offices. i Foot and mounted police were sum- ] moned from the surrounding stations I until they were 500 strong. They forced j the men out of the gates, but some hours j after the riot was quelled the yard caught I fire. Stocks worth £1,000,000 are threat- ! ened with total destruction. The yard j covers 21 acres, which is a- blazing in- | ferno. The damage at Gliksten's fire is authoritatively estimated at £250,000. Gliksten's firm informed the press that the unemployed were totally unconnected with tho fire. The outbreak commenced on the | canal side, which could not be reached by the unemployed. August 12. A total of £860.000 is claimed in respect 1 to the Stratford timber ward fire. It is stated to be a record claim in the history
