Several prisoners appeared at the Supreme < tft enronce before Mr Justice Adam s to-day. and in granting probation to a iciaci, bis Honor tianc occasion to express his views on the meaning- of probation,* and also in another case to i cier incident tily to the ( ourt of Appeal's recent decision in regard to the standard of our i.-lmiont “The Court of Appeal,” said 'bis Honor’ “did not in fact, lay down any new principle. The application of the principle has been in practice for 20 years. Probation,” I said his Honor, at a later singe, “j s not & license to do wrong, nor is it very desirable to differentiate it from nunishment in actual fact. If is _ itself, in my judgment, a somewhat serious punishment. A prisoner put on probation must, understand he must be exceedingly careful to comply implicitly with the directions of iho Probation Officer, and with the conditions laid down in the 1920 Act.”
