CANTERBURY MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 15. Aji inquiry for oats has set in from the Rortli Island to a limited extent, and! has rather tended to brighten the position. Local stocks of oats are abnormally light for J ul’y, and farmers are offering' very few at current quotations of 2s 9d to 2s lOd. Red clover has been the medium of business at 105 s per cwt dressed (equal to up to 9d per lb to farmers for undressed). Both north and south have been inquiring, and the Old Country is also stated to Ido in the market. White clover is also being inquired for. Linseed is saleable at £l6, f.0.b.5.i., equal to about .■€l3, country stations. There has been a little business at this figure. Potatoes have sagged to their lowest point this year. Substantial shipments have been consigned to Auckland during the past -week or sot giving stocks there no opportunity of diminishing, with the inevitable result "that values have tumbled. One consignor lias received on his consignment $ return of £2 2s. About £2 5s per ten at country stations would cover merchants’ offers. CAMARU MARKETS. vPrcm Our 07, m Cquhk3pondsnt.) OAMARU. July 16. An air of depressing dulness still pervades the local markets, which are only relieved from absolute somnolence by occasional transactions- of small moment. Wheat continues to come forward intermittently, and is readily taken by millers at Government prices. Included in this week’s transaction were a lino cf 350 sacks of Hunteis and a mixed line of 3JO sacks composed of Hunters and Tuscan in equal proportions. Inquiries have elicited the information that there are still a few thousand sacks in the hands c-f North Otago growers, but these will soon go into consumption when available. The .cat market has weakened a little on the week, and, though a number of transactions are reported, the prices show a decline in values. Some holders, however, decline to accept the current rates as representing permanent values. Sale 3 cf milling Gallons were made at 3s net, delivered in Oaniaru, 3s less commission at country stations, and 3s net at a country station for a heavy sample. A grade Gartons have changed hands at from 2s 10:1 net at country stations to 3s less commission, and B's at 2s 8d net at country stations. A sale of Dun oaten sheaf chaff is reported at £4 15s net on trucks, but outside of this no business has been done in chaff. Cowgress seed has shown a slight hardening tendency, but the only sale reported was made at 9d net, delivered in Oaniaru. There has been nothing doing in potatoes. What business is being clone with the North Island is going to Canterbury, where merchants are quoting prices with which local brokers are unable to compete. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. (Ltd.) report as under: Oats. —The market is steady; good heavy Gartons are in demand. We quote: A Gartons, 3s to 3s id; good to best feed, 2s lOd to 2s lid. Wheat. —Millers are taking all lines at full Government rates. Potatoes. —The market is easier. Dost Taieri tables, £4 ss; others, £3 15s ; •. Chaff. —Good heavy-weight chaff is wanted. We quote: £5 10s to £5 12s 6d; medium to good, £5 to £5 ss; light and discoloured, £4 103 to £4 15s. Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Ltd.) report as follows: Oats.—Very few lines are offering at present, ruling values failing for the most part to tempt growers, who are firm holders. In the meantime prices are unchanged. We quote: A Gartons to 3s; best feed, 2e 9d to 2s lOd per bushel (sacks extra). Potatoes. —There is no activity in the market, and the very poor demand is confined to choice tables, other descriptions being neglected. We quote: Prime Taieris, to £4 os; others, £3 15s to £4 per ton (sacks in) . Wheat. —All lines of at all decent quality are being accepted by millers. Chaff. —The market is still bare, and is firm at late rates for all good feed linos. We quote: Prime oaten sheaf, to £5 12s 6d; good to best feed, £5 5s to £5 10s per toil tracks extra). SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (From Oup. Own Correspondents.l INVERCARGILL, July 16. Oats. —Farmers are not offering as freely as they were a few weeks ago owing to the id merchants. There has been a little more inquiry from the north during the past few days, and business on a small scale could be done with London for prompt shipment if space were available. The shipping companies are not anxious to grant further bookings, as owing to the resumption of wool sales there is more cargo offering. The present value of A grade Gallons on trucks at country stations is 2s Gd to 2& 7d, according to the distance from Bluff, while B grade Gartons are worth one penny less. Chnff. —There are a fair number of offerings, but the demand is purely a local one, merchants consequently are not eager to make heavy purchases. Heavy, bright chaff is bringing up to £4 on trucks. Ryegrass.—This market is fairly strong, but offerings are trifling. Heavy, clean lines cue wortli as much as 3s Gd on trucks; light seed, 3s to 3s 4d. Potatoes.—These are very quiet, as the inquiry from northern merchants is not keen. The nominal value is £3 on trucks. Hemp.—There is practically little interest at the present juncture, as it is rather early yet for millers to recommence operations, apart from which the present prices are so low that it is probable very few millers will set their wheels in motion this season unices there is a substantial improvement. PRODUCE REPORT. Messrs J. Nathan and Co. (Wellington) report as follows: Butter. The drought in the United Kingdom lias affected the production of butter, and as a, com-equoncc New Zealand has made an appreciable advance to 2205, and Australian to 200 s. This applies, of course, to the Government stocks or butter, and it is to be hoped that increased prices will not affect the consumption. Danish bid hr i- quoted at 230 s per cwt. Local supplies ;u ' still ample, and there i 3 not much change in the demand. Tlie very mild winter experienced up to date has had tlic effect of keeping manufacturing operations going much later than usual, and odd lots of fresh butter are still coming to hand. It is reported that there is a move on foot to establish a fresh working arrangement. from July 31, and it is hoped that factories will consider any propofv.il that may b put forward in a true co-operative spirit. PROPERTY SALE. Mr I). M. spending held a sale of a freehold property at his roams yesterday. The property consisted of allotment 10, block I,

Township of Hillside., containing 8 poles, with five-roomed dwelling thereon. It was sold for £290. Messrs Alex. Harris and Co. submitted at auction on Friday, in the estate of Joshua Hall (deceased), part of section 90, Rothesay, containing 1 rood 21.5 poles. It was sold to a client for £6O. The Hastings sections were passed in, and are now being offered for sale j privately. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (,I‘T.cjf Our Ovtx Correspondent.) Stock. —The stock market during the past week has remained practically unchanged, although there is a very good inquiry for breeding ewes, also for forward wethers, and n slight inquiry for m.s. hoggets to shear. The number of decent hoggets offering . m Southland at present are very few owing to so many lambs being frozen. The prices ruling in the cattle market are on a par with those quoted last week, very little alteration being noticeable. At the fortnightly sale held at Wallacetown a very heavy entry of fat beef came forward, also a large entry for dairy cows and heifers; the total, yarding was cleared, ox beef making within the vicinity of £2 per hundred. There vas also a keen inquiry for dairy cows and heifers, and any decent sorts offering met with a ready sale. The following prices may be. quoted : Store Sheep.—Four and six-tooth ewes, extra good, from 2is 1 o 25s Gd; two-tooth ewes, in lamb, from 21s to 235; average price, 20s to 21s; full and failing-mouth ewes, ( from 12s to 15s, according to condition; forward four and six-tooth wethers, from 21s to 225; two-tooth wethers, from 16s to 18s; extra good, ills; m.s. lambs, good sorts, from 10s to 12s; average, from 83 to 9s. THE OAMARU MARKETS. (Fro:,l Our Own Correspondent.) The stock market remains in a very bad wav. This week’s regular market sale was one of the poorest on record, and sales by private treaty are, like angels’ visits, few and far between. In sheep the only apparent demand is for good breeding ewes, which are scarce so far as sellers are concerned, line of 300 two-tooth ewes in lamb found a ready buyer at 2-Os, and a mixed line of i four, six,' and eight-tooth ewes in lamb j changed hands at 19s. For old ewes there is practically no market, and a failingmouthed. in lamb was quitted at 7s 6d. hat sheep were dealt in in lines at 24s for wethers and 18s for ewes. Very little business has been done in cattle. A line of fat bullocks was sold at £l4, and the only’ sales in stores were a • line of 21-year-okl" steers at £5, and a line of well-bred yearlings at £3. The only transaction reported in dairy cattle is the sale of a line of spring-calving three-year-old heifers at £8 10s. THE FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD.
