OAMARU

July 1 —The weather lately has been cloudy and cold, but the sun is out to-day, which is quite warm. A strong gale was experienced in the country, and some damage was done -at Ixurow and Enfield, Snow fell on the mountains. K-Ci'-ial -—members of the North Otago Club recently tendered Mr L. E. Haines, the retiring manager of the Bank of New Zealand, a valedictory social. Mr W. Gardiner presided, and read apologies for non-attend-ance from nine leading residents. Mr Haimes was the recipient of a silver rose bowl and c.ake dish, and Miss Ham-es was presented with -i pendant and chain. Eulo-p-islic speeches 'were made by Messro M Dermid (Mayor), A. G. Creagh, K.G.. J. D. Grant A. Hamilton (National B-ankh E. F. Armstrong, J. W. Saunders (Union Bank), R K Ireland, and W. Sumpter, ail referrirn- to Mr Haines’a untiring industry m connection with the Beautifying- Society, the Athenaeum, Hospital Board Chamber of cS Hace Clubs, Bowling Clubs and Golf Clubs, and to Mrs Harness .urge efforts h, connection with patriotic work. Mr Haines suitably replied and was accorded hearty cheers. He introduced his successor, Mr Beevor Roll. Death—Mr William Shears, who was well known in the- Otago Central district, died in the Hospital last Sunday week at the age of 80 years. Ho came from Cornwall to NewZealand some 50 years ago. Ho worked at Waipori, Opliir, Cromwell, Garrick Range, and Mount Criffel before coming to Oamaru,

some years ago. Evening Wedding.—The first, vending celebrated in the evening in Oamaru came off last evening, and drew a large crowd to the Anglican Church, the building being unable to noeomn ©date all tho people. The con-

tractmg’ parties were Miss Ada May Hasting®, eldest- daughter of Mr and Mrs Hasting®, »of the Junction Private Hotel, and Mr Wm. M. Brille. Both had received presentations before the ceremony. The Archdeacon Russell officiated, and the guests were afterwards entertained at the Junction.
