Cameron, and J. Bowie (lion, secretary). Obituary.—Death has again been busy among us. William, son of Mr H. G. VVcbber, after iiaving been an inmate of the Napier Hospital for several months, passed awry last week, and the body was brought o\ eriand and interred here.—Cn Thursday evening Mr Jolm Bavey, a very old settler of the Fr-asertown district, passed away very suddenly of heart failure, and the funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at the Wairoa Cemetery. Accident.—The difficulties of comimmication were again very vividly shown this week, v.nen a carlo-ad cf passengers met with a serious accident on the lieftka Hill. The road was very greasy, and the car slipped and somersaulted over the bank, two of the passengers, Messrs Harris and Taylor, being caught v.ndemoa.h and severely injured, 1 lie former especially so. Th© victims are at present in the AVairoa Hospital. The work c-i putting in the deviation between Vfaikare and Uohaka is being pushed on with consistent energy, but this accident may cause tne redoubling of the speed of construction. Sports.—The cricket season just ended was a most successful one. The players considered that a part at least of the enjoyment attached to the games was owing to 111© kindness of tile ladies who organised tho afternoon teas, and to th© umpires who officiated at tho games; and to show their appreciation they presented Mesdam-es Bowie and Couper with handsome silver vases and Mr Bowie with a beautiful safety razor. The opening hcckoy games of the season were played on Saturday. In t4i© ladies’ games for the Brandon Cup (Senior) the Wairoa. District High School team met Fras&rtown cn th© latter’s ground. The schoolgirls were, however, outclassed by the superior weight and experience of their redoubtable opponents, and suffered defeat Lv 8 points to nil, several of the school players being quit© inexperienced and very light. Mr A. H. Unwin controlled the game. The men’s game. United v. Mercantile, resulted in a, win for tho latter by 5 points to- 1, tlicir full-back line (Colley. Campbell, and Harker) pr< ving a veritable fortress that withstood onslaught after onslaught by (he speedy United forwards. Captain Martin was the referee in charge of the game.—The opening game of the football season was played between City *nnd To pure, on the latter’s ground at NorGi Clyde, and veruked in a win for the To.iruae team by 6 points to 3. The juniors .also men, a drawn game resulting—s all.
