The Tasman arrived at Auckland from Liverpool on the 9th inst. The Shropshire arrived at Wellington from Liverpool on the 9th inst. The Y\ aihemo arrived at San Francisco from Sydney on the 7th inst. Ihe Wangaratta arrived Greenock from Wellington on the 7lh inst. The Opawa arrived at Panama from New Zealand on the £lll inst. AN OLD SEA CAPTAIN. The late Captain Berneeh was born at lriestp, Austria, on January 1, 1847. He ailived in New Zealand at an early age, alia was for nine years in the service of the Otago Harbour Board, previous to joining the Union Steam Ship Company in March, 1876, as master of the Beautiful Star. He was in command at various periods of the old Maori, Southern Cross, Mahinapua, Ohau, Penguin, Flora, Rotorua’ Corinna, Te Anau, Hauroto, Wakatipu, Mapourika, Moura, Waihora, Talune, Tarawera, Monowai, Waikare, and Wurrirnoo. He was the first commodore of the Union Company’s fleet, his successor being Captain Neville. He retired from the Union Company’s service on December 31, 1909, and had lived in retirement ever since. THE BURNING OF THE ANTIOPE. Additional information as to the burning of the barque Antiope at Delagoa Bay on March 13 was supplied when seven members of the vessel's crew reached Auckland on April 4 by the Riverina from Sydney. One of the apprentices, acting as spokesman for the. party, said the tire broke out at about liaif-past 3 o’clock in the morning, when the Antiope was lying at anchor in Delagoa Bay, about three miles from the shore, for the purpose of unloading timber. It started in the sail-locker, and, despite an exhaustive inquiry, its origin remained a mystery. The flames, he said, had been raging for three hours before the crew received any assistance in fighting the fire. After working continuously until 11 a.ni. they succeeded in getting it under control, and finally it was extinguished. The vessel was damaged to the extent of £40,000, and has been abandoned to the underwriters. Included in the cargo were about 5000 gun cartridges, which explocied, two negroes who came aboard in a tug receiving shot wounds in their arms.
