AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By

Digger.

The Avondale Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was a success. A feature of the gathering was the number of good dividends returned. There was plenty of money available, the sum of £129,985 being passed through the machine during the two days, an increase of £38,665 on last year’s total. At that meeting, however, it rained in torrents on the opening day, and on the second day the jockeys went on strike. Landslide won the leading event in good style. Gold Kip looked a winner at the distance, but failed to stall off Landslide’s final run. Tinohoro tried to win all the way, but stopped over the last furlong. Swift Flight had the services of H. Gray in the Maiden, and was backed down to a very short price; but the best the imported horse could do was to fill second place to Jollie Princess. The consistent Tenacious scored an easy victory in the Hurdles. Luperino, the winner of the Hurdles and Steeplechase at Ellerslie last weekf came to grief. Mentmore ran a good race for a maiden, and should not be long in picking up a good stake over small sticks. Dead Sweet led all the way in the Oakleigh Handicap, returning his supporters a handsome dividend. Hitherto the Quinn Abbey gelding had only run in sprint events, and a race extending to nine furlongs was considered beyond him. Capsal had a hollow victory in the Steeplechase. The son of Captain will have plenty of friends in the big steeplechases later on. Ma Copper shaped well for a beginner, and may be useful during the jumping season. Tieki was an outsider in the Railway Handicap. The Gisborne horse was in front practically aTI the way, winning nicely at the finish by a length from Archie. King Abbey was backed down to a very short price, but let his supporters down badly, finishing last. Khublai Khan beat a good field in the Welter on the opening day, winning fairly easily. At the Ellerslie meeting Mr Alison offered to sell the son of Aryan for 500 gs, but a would-be buyer stopped at 450 gs. During the interval the horse has picked up £550 in stakes. Slowcoach won the Hurdles on the second day nicely. The Wauken Phast gelding will be more than useful during the jumping season. Guerre-a-Mort filled the role of runner-up in the hurdle race each day. Mangawhero brought off the surprise of the meeting by winning the Dominion Handicap. A win for his owner, P. Bolton, was not out of its turn. Gold Kip put ur> a good performance in the Autumn Handicap, winning with 9.4 in the saddle. . Blue .Cross found the company a little too good, running third each day. At the same meeting lagt year he won both days. The Steeplechase on the second day was a farce, only two out of the seven starters getting round. Coroglen looked an easy winner over the last round, but failed to go through the gap into the course proper, throwing his rider heavily. This left Daloopin to come in by himself. Ma Copper got second, a furlong away. Daniels, the rider of Coroglen, sustained a compound fracture of the leg. The Taranaki trainer E. George won a couple of races on the second day with Hipo and Stork. The former is a fairly smart youngster, being very quick out at the barrier. Lady Glissas should soon pick up a minor event. Rada, Halifax, Sunny Loch, Auckland. Pitch Dark, Sagacity. Sunart gave nothing a chance in the Autumn Handicap. He took charge six furlongs from home, and won well at°th© finish. Rational was a fair third, with Pluto- close up. Anomaly, who pulled out and Tan disappointingly, did not stay cm as well as his previous form suggested. The Hawk got a good run on the rails when the field went wide entering the straight. Rational ran a good colt under his weight in Sun-art’s time. Starters: Rational, Absurdum, Winning Hit (coupled with Purple Spur), Anomaly, Pluto, Creme de Menthe, The Hawk, Kick Off, Aureate. There was no pace on in the early part of the Trentham Gold Cup, in which the result again proved that a three-year-old has always the best of the figures over a distance of ground. Sasanof was proclaimed as the winner as they came up the running, but Duo won comfortably by far more than the winning margin suggests. Starters: Duo, Sasanof, Rouen, Johnny Walker. Gray rode a bad race on Sasanof in making his run too- soon. When the field were at the post in the Suburban Handicap they got away in a heavy downpour of rain. Inah was the smartest over the first four furlongs, but when it came to business Solfanelio and Tigritiya singled themselves out, and the former finally won with a good deal in hand. tion was too strong at the weights. Starters: Golden Bubble, Inah, Miss Mimic, Silver Peak, Solfanelio, Tigritiya, Early Dawn, Canyon, Mustard Pot, Raceful, Barleycorn, Astinome. Fahrinade made play and showed the way in the Belmont Handicap, but at the finish Mosthenes won well. Robert Fox was charged in the Magistrate’s Court- to-day with the forgery of three totaiisator tickets, and with uttering the same to William Herbert Evett on the final day of the last race meeting at Trentham. Fox was arrested in Christchurch. The pay-out clerk at the totaiisator said that the three tickets produced were on horse No. 7 on the last race (No. 8). At about 5.20 toe three tickets were presented for payment. They did not appear to be quite regular, and witness referred them to the officer in charge. They were shown to the mechanic, who said they did not come out of the machine in that condition. The tickets had been bought presumably on another horse in the eighth race, and had been .altered, the number in the middle of the tickets being rubbed out and No. 7 inserted. The word “seven” had also been put in, in place of the other word erased. Witness did not pay out. CLAIMS AGAINST JOCKEYS, AUCKLAND, April 7. Claims by the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association to recover from G. H. Carmont and other members certain moneys, being a percentage of their winning fees, were heard this morning at the Magistrate's Court before Mr W. R. M‘Kean, S.M. Mr Bagnall. when the first case was called, said this was one of £5 cases, in which lie had been instructed to appear for the defence bv Air C. P. Skerett, K.C. Just before Easter he saw Mr Skerett, and he agreed that there was no- defence on law. Mr Bagnall said lie must ask the court to adjourn all the cases for 14 days to enable him to write to each defcendant informing him of the position, as lie did not wish judgment to be entered against them by default. Air Skelton, for the plaintiff association, said that although ho was instructed to oppose any adjournment, it seemed to him that Mr Bagnall’s request was a. reasonable one. Ilis Worship adjourned all the cases for 14 days.
