That the undergraduate’s gown can become something more practical than a mere symbol of scholastic attainment was demonstrated on a recent afternoon during the heavy rain, when a gentleman of mature years was observed in the tram shelter wearing a student’s gown as a protection against the weather (reports the Press). Though of a. somewhat unusual cut for a raincoat, it appeared to be quite as efficacious as one of those garments. Owing to lack of shipping approximately 4,000,000 feet of timber is on the skids of the West Coast mills awaiting shipment. The want of shipping is hampering the mills considerably (reports the Greymouth Star). Practical sympathy with Mrs Farnsworth, widow of Mr Ray Farnsworth, foreman of the Feilding Fire Brigade, who lost his life in a railway crossing accident, while proceeding to a fire, has been shown by residents of the district. A fund was opened Immediately after the accident, and already the sum of £325 has been donated, it being expected that the amount will be considerably augmented.
