STRATH-TAIERI SHOW

The Strath-Taieri A. and P. Society's twentieth annual show was held at Middlemarch on March 28. Unfortunately the day broke with an overcast sky and a cold wind made the prospects none too bright. The effect was shown in the gate takings, which were not so good us last year, but the attendance was still fairly satisfactory. In addition to a representative gathering of district settlers, a large number of visitors went up from Dtmedin, many of whom stayed in the township for the night to attend the society’s customary dance. The business side of the show shows steady progress. Entries were about 652, approximately 114 more than last year, which is an advance with which the society may feel well satisfied. The increase is largely explained by the growing popularity of the hackney classes and the competitions. There were as many as 27 entries in one hunting

class, and there were also large fields of good useful-looking hacks. It is certainly pleasant to find one district in which the motor car has not yet driven out the horse, and the course of the competitions yesterday showed that there are still many good horsemen about Middlemarch. The Otago Hunt Club, as a club, and through its members, figured prominently in the entries as one result of its Easter hunt in StrathTaieri. The draught horses were also a well-grown, handy lot, and gave the judge a good deal of trouble in determining upon his awards. The sheep section was not nearly so strong as it ought to be at Middlemarch. Onl? one Oorriedale sheep was exhibited, and about a dozen each of Romneys and Border Leicesters. The fat sheep were a well-conditioned class, and a much bigger one numerically. Mr W. Moynihan wan the chief prize-winner. He also took the special prize for the best pen of fat lambs. Cattle were a strong section, with the exception of the Ayrshires, for which there was only one entry. Mr Moynihan was again the principal exhibitor of fat stock. There was keen competition in the dairy cow classes, and the prizes were well distributed. The prize for the best dairy cow went to Mr W. Robertson, who had three fine milkers on exhibition, and that *or the cottar’s cow to Mrs R. Walker. The Shorthorn bulls were a very fine lot, and said by the judge to be just as good as be had ever seen, especially the yearling heifer. There was a fine exhibition of field roots. The mangolds were, in the judge’s opinion, exceptionally good. The green top turnips would have compared favourably with any metropolitan show, and the Imperial Green Globes were a treat to see, all being worthy of a prize. The potatoes were not so well shaped, but the whole exhibit in his opinion was a credit to the district. The poultry section aroused interest, there being an excellent display from the Government farm at Milton. During luncheon gold medals for life membership were presented by the president of the society to Messrs D. Peat, John Tisdall, and R. Walker (secretary). Mr F. Moynihan would also have received a medal had he been present. Mr Walker remarked that the society had been in existence for 20 years, and was still doing well. It may be added that he has been at the helm in his official capacity ever since the society was formed, and to him much credit is due for his good work on its behalf. Among the visitors to the show were Messrs J. Horn and J. Edie, M.P.’s, and Inspector Craig. Pleasant music was supplied by the Middlemarch Band. Results : CATTLE. Judge: Mr J. M’Leod (Gimmerburn).
