SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (From Ocr Own Correspondents.) INVERCARGILL, Ma.rch 5. During the past week the stock market hare has shown a downward tendency in all classes. Freeing buyers are not operating at all, and this, of course, has a marked effect on the store market. Prices for prime ox beef have dropped considerably during the past fortnight; also prices for lamb and wether mutton. The following prices may be quoted: Fat Sheep.—Extra prime wethers, 24s to 265; prime, 20s to 225; unfinished, down to 15s; extra prime ewes, 10s to 12s; prime, 7s to 8s; unfinished, down to ss. Fat Cattle.—Extra prime bullocks, £B' to £9 10s; prime, £7 10s, to £8; unfinished, down • to £6 10s; extra prime cows, £5 to £T. OAMARU MARKETS. (From Our Own Coebespondsnt.) OAMARU, March 5. The stock market, which had been in a declining state far some time previously, utterly collapsed at the beginning of the week. There had been some premonitions in that direction, but the collapse was far beyond any anticipations. It cam© at this week’s regular sale on Tuesday, and is reported to be the biggest thing of the kind known in the district for fully 20 years. There has been a very fair yarding of both sheep and cattle, and a representative attendance of farmers, but these were not buyers. The only class that realised anything approaching previous values were lambs, one line of heavy weights bringing 32s and others of lighter weight 245. The heaviest of the fat ewes found buyers at 245, but others dropped down to as low as 12s. Store ewes were quitted at 3s 9d, while lambs suitable for putting upon rape went at from 12s t-o 16s, and store lambs touched as low as 5s 3d. This experience has practically paralysed the market, both sellers and possible buyers being restrained by doubts as to what will be the next movement. Still, a few transactions are reported, the most noteworthy being the sale of 2000 rape lambs at 16s. * A particularly good line of crossbred lambs in very forward condition was taken at 21s, while 300 sound-mouthed halfbred station ewes found a buyer at 245. These may be accounted remarkably good sales under the existing conditions. Cattle have also experienced a big drop, and at the weekly sale the best price realised for prime fat bullocks was £lO 10s, and for prime fat heifers £B. Store steers, 15 months old, were quitted at 245, and calves at ss. No transactions by private treaty have since been reported. THE FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD. This is particularly hard oif our newlystarted ex-soldier growers, who will obtain low prices for tneir year’s hard work. Jam fruits: Factories have had to close down, and jam fruits have practically no demand. This is unfortunate, as a week since our market gave every promise of good values being realised until the end of tho season. An exceedingly keen demand] for choice Heathcote Valley-grown tomatoes, prices ranging from 4d to 6d, due to the fact that the Nelson shipments are quite out of the market owing to the waterside workers’ trouble.
