ANOTHER NEW JUDGE

MR A S. ADAMS APPOINTED. TO SUCCEED MR JUSTICE COOPER. WELLINGTON, March 5. Mr A. S. Adams, at present Crown Solicitor at Dunedin, will be appointed to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court Bench, which will arise at the end of this month, through the resignation of Mr Justice Cooper. Mr Adams is a native of Otago, having been born at Taieri Mouth in 1861. His parents arrived at Port Chalmers in the ship Blundell in 1848, and settled at Taieri where they engaged in farming. Mr Adams was educated at the Old Stone School, at the time when Sir Robert Stout was on the teaching staff. Later he at- | tended the Middle District School. In j January, 1874, Mr Adams entered the law ! office of his brother (Mr J. A. D. Adams). { In 1883 he passed his final examinations, | receiving the award of the Canterbury Law j Society’s honours certificate. He was ad- | mitted a barrister and solicitor the same year and entered into partnership with his brother, which partnership was dissolved by the latter’s retirement in 1910. Mr F. B. Adams and Mr H. S. Adams have within the past two years joined their father in the firm. In July of last year Mr Adams was appointed Crown Solicitor in succession to Mr W. C. MacGregor, who was appointed Solicitor-General. On one occasion —at the general election in 1908 —Mr Adams was a candidate for flection to Parliament, standing for Dunedin W est, but was defeated by a formidable opponent in the person of the lion. Through-out his life Mr Adams has been Uo-velv identified with temperance organisations and latterly with the prohibition movement, and at the ore sent, tide he is president of the New Zealand Alliance a position he has occupied on six or seven different occasions. ITo has #l/0 taken an active nart in the religious life of the community, and is at present a deacon of the Hanover Street Baptist Church. He has also beep president of the Baptist Union of New Zealand.
