FIRE BRIGADES
NAPIER, February 28. The forty-second annual conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association of Now Zealand was opened here this morning, the president (Mr G. Goodwin, Akaroa) being in the chair. There were 150 delegates present. In welcoming the delegates tho president mentioned that the executive had been successful in securing a grant of £IOOO from the Insurance Council and an increase in the subsidy from the Government from £3OO to £IOOO in demonstration .year, and £SOO in conference year. The report of the executive reviewed the work of what was termed tho most successful year in the association’s history. The grant to sub-associations running demonstrations in an “ off ” year was fixed on a basis of £1 for £l up to £SO. Mr T. J. Watt (secretary) was appointed travelling advisory superintendent. March 1. The United Fire Brigades Association today accepted an invitation of the Palmerston North Brigade to hold the next conference there. The following officers wore elected for tho ensuing year President, Captain C. A. Lucas (St. Hilda) ; vice-presidents—sen'or, Superintendent W. 11. Barnard (Palmerston North) ; junior, Captain IT. E. Greathead (Eketahuna) : treasurer and secretary, Mr C. A. Osborne (Onehunga); auditor, Mr P. R. Fraser (Auckland). March 2. The first demonstration of the United Fire Brigades’ Association for six years opened here to-day in splendid weather, and will conclude on Saturday. Seventyeight brigades are competing.
