MEAT AND FREIGHT.

LONDON, March 1. There is considerable congestion in the refrigerating stores in England, and owing to large arrivals of meat the discharge of | steamers is much delayed. Large quanti j ties of New Zealand lamb are arriving ! from the United States, from where it is being re-exported owing to the poor de mand there, better prices being obtainable in England. British importers are not disposed to purchase New Zealand lamb ahead, as it is understood that the Marcn killings cannot be shipped till August. I There is little prospect of any improvej merit in the freight position, as there is no j inducement for liners to go to New Zeaj land, especially if the 150,000 tons of coal 1 purchased by 'the Government is shipped | in tramps. The barque La France, the world's largest sailing vessel, is loading 7000 tons of coal at Newport for New Zealand. This is no part of the Neagle contract for 150,000 tons for the New Zealand railways; for this the firm is seeking steam freight. The first shipment of the new contract is expected to leave a fortnight hence, but Sir James Allen’s signature to the contract is awaiting Mr Massey’s sanction.
