A London Press Association cable message announces the death of Mr S. Haigh, the well-known Yorkshire cricketer. The deceased was in his fifty-first year. A Press Association message from Christchurch reports that Mr R. Caughley, the Christchurch manager of the Alliance Assurance Company, has been appointed general manager for" New Zealand, at the company’s head office at Wellington. Mr R. D. Isaacs, formerly of the head office of the Railway Department, and more recently of Christchurch, has been transferred to Dunedin as assistant traffic manager. Mr Isaacs was at one time a prominent Rugby representative forward. For many years he was an Otago delegate on the New Zealand Rugby Union. Mr John Caughley, Assistant Director of Education, has been appointed Director in succession to Dr Anderson, who is retiring on superannuation. The Dunedin Presbytery’s nominee for the office of Moderator of the Svnod of Otago and Southland is the Rev. Alexander Morton, of Lovell's Flat. By members standing in silence the Dunedin Presbytery on the Ist recorded its sympathy with the bereaved relatives of the late Dr Alexander White, principal of the United Free Church College, Edinburgh. The Presbytery of Dunedin, at its meeting last week, appointed the Rev. Ernest Adams, of Chalmers Church, Moderator for the ensuing six months. The Revs. R. M’Cuily and R. E. Evans declined the office. Mr Cowan, first assistant at the Kaitangata School, has been recommended for the position of third assistant at North-East Valley. Miss J. F. Johnston, of the Whare Flat School, was presented by the pupils with a gold brooch on the occasion of her departure for the Training College. At the meeting- of the Southland Presbytery on the Ist (wires our Invercargill correspondent) a call from Knox Church to the Rev. Janies Chisholm, signed by 142 members and 48 adherents, was sustained. The induction was fixed for March 31. A Wellington message states that the Hon. W. I). Stewart was 6Worn in as Minister of the Crown at a full meeting of the Executive Council. In addition to the portfolio of Internal Affairs, he will probably deal with the Customs Department. At the annual meeting- of the Otago High School Old Boys’ Society, held on the Ist, it was decided to convey to the Hon. W. Downie Stewart the heartiest congratulations of the society on his elevation to the Ministry. Congratulations were also extended to the new Minister by the executive of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association. Dr Trotter was approached by a deputation of several leading citizens during the week, and as a result of their representations will accept nomination as Mayor of Riverton for a further term. Air John Rowe, of Gladstone (Wairarapa), celebrated his 103rd birthday last week. Air Rowe attended the Early Settlers’ Association’s gathering at Carterton, at which he made an interesting speech. A New York Press Association telegram announces the death of Air Champ Clark, a Democratic leader and a former Speaker of Congress. The New Zealand Loan and Alercantila Agency Company (Ltd.) has received advice from London that the board has appointed Mr D. M. Alorgan, an inspector of the company, to be the chief inspector for New Zealand. Air Morgan has been in the service of the company for many years, and is regarded as one of its most experienced and capable officers. A Press Association message from Wellington states that tributes to the memory of the late Sir James Prendergast were paid at the Supreme Court by the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), the Attorney-general (Sir Francis Bell), and Mr C. P. Skerrett, K.C., on behalf of a gathering of members of the legal profession. The Rev. Dr Gibb, president of the Presbyterian General Assembly Union Committee, who has been conferring with members of the committee representing the Congregational Church, returned nortli by the second express on the 3rd. The basis of Church union has been drafted, and the members of the Presbyterian Committee are unanimously in favour of the principles embodied. The members of the Congregational Committee, who have only advisory powers, are understood to also favour the proposed basis. A Press Association message from Wellington states that Mr Michael Clyde Barnett has been appointed Assistant Public Trustee in place of Mr J. W. Macdonald, recently promoted Public Trustee. Air W. A. Fordham, controller of the mortgage division of the Public Trust Office, is about to retire on superannuation after having completed over 42 years’ service. A Press Association message from Tiina.ru reports that Air William Greene, the well-known artist, who is especially successful as an animal painter, and who has been art master at Timaru for many years at the High School and other Institutions, has been appointed art master at the Christchurch Technical College. He was bidden farewell on Friday by the South Canterbury Art Society, and presented with a wallet of Treasury notes. Presentations were made earlier in the week by the pupils of theBovs’ and Girls’ High Schools. Mr Greene had a prominent part in the founding and maintaining of the Art Society, and he is a very popular and esteemed citizen. The Rev. Charles J. Bush King was instituted as vicar of the parochial district of Taieri Piains-cum-Green Island at the Church of St. Luke, Mosgiel, on Wednesday evening. The service was conducted by the Ven. W. A. R. Fitchett ,as Archdeacon of Dunedin. There was a good congregation, including representatives from different parts of the district. Apologies were icceived from the local ministers, who had been specially invited, and letters and telegrams of congratulation were received from Dunedin and from as far away as Auckland. The Archdeacon gave a helpful address on the priest as a man of power,, this power being derived from his orders, and expressed through the administration" of the sacraments. Mr Bush-King commences his work with the best of good wishes from a largo circle of friends. The Ess on cl on Presbyterian Church, Melbourne, has given n cal! to the Rev. H. W. Burridge, ALA., 8.D., formerly of St. Paul’s, Invercargill, and of St.. John’s Wellington. The Rev. J. W. Shaw, ALA., at one time assistant-minister at Knox Church in this city, has resigned the charge of Mount Eden (Auckland) Presbyterian Church. Mr Shaw, who was the first minister of Mount Eden Church, has been appointed lecturer in English at Auckland Training College.

The death occurred suddenly at Auckland recently of Mr Henry Alder, for many years paat inspector of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Air Alder practically “died in harness,” for he was taken ill in the office at 10.30 a.m., and was conveyed to his home in Henley street, Parnell, but never recovered consciousness, death taking place about 3.30 p.m. The cause of death was febrile hemorrhage of the brain. A large gathering of residents assembled in the Pubuo Hall at North-East Harbour on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Mr Mid Mrs Urquhart and family, who are leaving the district, owing to the promotion of Mr Urquhart to the position of manager of the Hokitika branch of the National Bank of New Zealand. During the evening Mr and Mrs Urquhart were the recipients of a taken of esteem, the Rev.' G. M‘Donald and Air G. F. Bewley voicing the sentiments of the residents in regret at their guests’ departure, and the loss in particular sustained by Atacandrews Bay. Air Urquhart was presented on Saturday by the staff of the National Bank, where he was accountant, with a suit case as a parting gift.
