PROBLEM 5582.
By
W. Houston.
Black.
White. Black to play, White to draw. Mr Houston was long ago one of the kh a< f~ ing players in Dunedin, but moved to Melbourne, where he shed a bright light for many years. GAMES. The following games weTe played between Messrs J. A. Lucas and the late H. Halliday in an Otago Championship Tourney. Game 6642—‘‘Dundee.” Halliday’s move.
(b) This leaves Black in a cramped position which seems pretty hopeless; 6 9 looks good enough to carry on. Game 5643—“ Dundee.”
And Black won after considerable play, which was, however, badly mixed in writing out. (a) 30 26 is usual here. (b) White had a diraw at once by 32 27 and 30 26. The following three games were played in 1912 between Messrs G. Jewitt and T. Biggs, the well-known English players, and were forwarded by the late Mr Frank Dunne who supplied the notes. The games got in among seme draughts literature and have just been discovered.
(a) Introducing an old line of play "that latterly has been discarded in favour of 6 10, but is now receiving renewed attention. (b) This move has the merit of originality, but is not, we think, so strong as 18 14, which runs into a Ferrie v. Jordan match game. (c) After this “break” the game seems quite equal. (D) If 24 19, 11 16, 25 22, 9 13. 14 9 5 14, 18 9, 6 10, etc., drawn. (e) Nicely played, and leads to a straight draw.
is new i° me—is it sound for a draw ?—Jewitt. (b) If 27 24, 14 18. 23 14, 9 25, 29 22 1 6 and Black’s game looks good enough to draw. (c) 30 25 introduces a critical variation, but Black seems to have a sound) draw in hand by 7 11, 22 18, 15 22, 25 18, 1 6, 29 25 6 10 25 22, 10 15, 81 27, 9 13, 18 9. 6 14 30 0 8 11 16, 28 24, 16 19, 23 16, 14 18, etc., drawn.’ (r>) If 23 18, 6 10, etc., drawn. Game 5646—“ Denny” (10 14. 24 lg.)
, Black wins. (A) Setting a neat little “trap,” into which White straightway falls; 18 14 in reply would, of course, have drawn. SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS. Problem 6579 (by F. E. Hilliker).—Black on 1, 6, 8, 0, 10, 18, 19, 23. White on 13 15, 17, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32. White to play and win. 17 14 15 11 28 24 26 10 13 6 25 22 10 17 816 10 28 615 110 . Whit© wins.
