EDUCATION BOARD

The ordinary meeting of the Education Board was held on Tuesday morning, and ■was attended by Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), D. Borrie, P. M’Kinlay, J. H. Wilkinson. R. H. Todd, G. Livingstone, J. Horn, M.P., J. Smith, W. R. Brugh, and the Hon. D. T. Fleming. GENERAL. . 14 was decided to carry out the asphalt- I ing of the grounds at the teacher’s residence, Otepopo, at a cost of £3O, on the usual conditions. The Beaumont Committee applied for some of the timber of the old schoolroom to repair the floor, playshed, and coal house.—The architect reported that the timber had been sold anil removed from the ground.—Architect’s report to be forwarded to the committee. File architect recommended that a water service be laid on to the teacher’s residence at East Taieri.—Approved. The architect was instructed to report on the application of the Hawea Flat Committee for new out buildings. The Kelso Committee asked for improved drainage at the out offices. —The architect reported that the out offices were shifted to their present site under pressure from the sohool committee and the teacher, and that tile difficulty in regard to drainage was then pointed out by him. —The architect was instructed to bring up a lecommendation whereby the present difficulty could be removed. The architect stated that he hoped to report next month on the application by the Ratanui Committee for repairs to tho fence round tho school ground. Received. It was decided to approve of the townships of Hampden and Milton as the locality where supplementary model schools should be provided. The department notified that the school medical service had been transferred from the Education to the Public Health Department. The notification was in connection with the regulations for the employment of itinerary teachers to give house-to-house instructions to pupils in isolated districts. — The Chairman remarked that he had always been against the introduction of itinerant teachers into their district. The architect was instructed to report on the condition of the fence between Mr

Moynihan’s property and the Totara School glebe. The question of repairs, etc., at the Pine Hill and Strath-Taieri Schools was left in the hands of the architect, with power to act. It was decided that the head master of the Kelso School be asked to pay half the cost of the installation of a hot water service at his residence. The board agreed to pay the other half. The architect was authorised to spend ufj to £IOO in altering Mrs Elliott’s _tgsidence at Nevis in order to make it suitable for a schoolroom. The department to be also asked for a grant. The carrying out of a number of repairs to the Otepopo School was left in the hands of the architect. Repairs to the Watati teacher’s residence were decided on, at a cost of about £22. It was decided to carry out repairs at the residence of the head master at Sawyers’ Bay, at a cost of £9O. Tire architect was granted authority to arrange regarding the renewal of water tanks at Sha- Point. It was decided to carry out small repairs et tho Upper Junction School, at a cost of £6. Tho architect reported that he did not favour the suggestion that a portion of the kitchen at the Sandymount School residence should be made into a bathroom, and that the present bathroom should be turned into a bedroom. —Noted. The architect was instructed to report on the teacher’s application for the renewal of the fence round part of the glebe at the Matau School. The application of the Otakou Sohool Committee for the rebuilding of the chimney at the school was held over. The department wrote that it. would not insist on the sale of the existing residence at Anderson’s Bay, but that it reserved to itself the rigid to review tho position at any time. The board agreed to the suggestion of the Ida Valiev Committee that consideration of the question of shifting the school to a more suitable site should be left over in the meantime. conveyance OF CHILDREN. Ratanui.—The teacher asked that a conveyance be provided to carry about nine children and herself to the school.—-Mr Find

later asked that, provision for conveying his children (four) to the school be made. If a conveyance were provided he would find a driver and horse. —The chairman and Mr Horn to look into the question of securing a trap. Drybread.—Mrs Haigh offered to drive the nine children from Drybread to Matakanui at £2 per week. —Accepted Tawanui. —Mr Arthur Wilson asked assistance for conveyance of his children to school. He was prepared to find a horse and trap if the board paid the driver. —Agreed to. Patearoa. —Mr W. E. Beattie asked that a household school be established at his residence, six miles from Patearoa. —Board to make the recognised grant. NEW RESIDENCE AT TAPANUI. The architect suggested that some of tho old timber from the school residence at Tapanui could bo used for the erection of the now r< sidence. —Tho board decided to go on with the erection of a six-roomed house, and to endeavour to obtain a larger grant from the department than that promised for a five-roomed house. —The work will be carried out by the board’s employees PURCHASE OF SITES, ETC. The department advised that, in view of the present stringency in public finance, it could not entertain applications for grants for the purchase of new sites or the extension of existing sites except in urgent cases. In view of the high prices of land, the Minister was of opinion that any funds available should be devoted to the provision of actual school accommodation for the pupils. Received. CONVEYANCE TO SECONDARY SCHOOLS. The department wrote that the cost of capitation for conveyance to secondary schools would bo so great that the Government did not see its way to sanction the expenditure involved. The whole question of payments for conveyance might come under review before long.—Received. SPECIAL CLASSES. The renting of rooms in Burns Hall for the purpose of special classes has been sanctioned by the Minister of Education, and arrangements are being made for tho supply of a teacher for partially deaf children, stammerers, and children with defective articulation.

Purches (High Street). GENERAL. Hie aitepeka Committee applied for an additional room at the school.—The apwas declined, but it. was decided to provide additional seating accommodation. An application was received from Owaka for the establishment of a district high school.—The Minister’s sanction to be obtained for the appointment of a secondary teacher. It was decided to grant a sum of £75 towards the cost of increasing the accommodation of the school at Spottis Creek. It was pointed out that the schoolhouse belonged to Mr Harvey, and that he would be expected to assist in the cost of the alteration. An application was received from residents at Matalcanui, asking that the school should be retained on the present site. — This question has been before the board for some time, a suggestion having been made that the Matakanui School should bo shifted to a site to meet the convenience of the Spottis Creek, Drybread. and Matakanui children.—The board decided to do nothing in the meantime. The teacher at the North Taieri School asked permission to let the school residence.—Agreed to on the usual conditions. Tho Committee of the North-East Harbour School asked that asphalting work should bo carried out in the playground.— The architect was instructed to spend up to £25 on the work. The Sawyer’s Bay Committee asked for inci-eased school accommodation. —The committee to be informed that the board does not consider that the committee has made out a sufficient case to warrant an application being made to the department for a grant. The Tawbiti School Committee asked that the school ground should be fenced, the cost being estimated at £3s.—Left in the hands of the architect to arrange. The Land Board reported that a school site of about five acres would be granted at Purakauiti, on condition that the proposed site was surveyed, and that, section 20, block IX. should revert to the Crown. — Land to be surveyed, and the department to be approached for a grant to pay the cost of erecting a new school on the site, the present school to be incorporated in the teacher’s residence. TOMAHAWK SCHOOL TO BE REOPENED. Mr Bossence (inspector) reported favourably on the application from the residents at Tomahawk that the school should be re-opened.—School to be re-opened, the architect to carry out necessary repairs. REGULATION 28 CANCELLED. The Department wrote stating that Regulation 28 had been cancelled. ’This is tho regulation which fixed the number and grades of salary of the assistant teachers to be employed in the infant departments of schools.
