WRECK OF THEE OMAKA
JUDGMENT OF COURT. WELLINGTON, February 13. The court gave judgment this morning at the nautical inquiry into the wreck of the Omaka. It found that the vessel was \vell fomd, properly manned, and seaworthy, and that during a southerly gale a heavy, confused sea struck her on the port quarter. She broached to and capsized. 'The court, in a rider, points out to the Minister that the evidence showed that at the time of the wreck the flagstaff at Pencarrow was undergoing repair, and the signalman was unable to give effective signals to two eteamers which passed shortly after. It hopes that in future no flagstaff will be removed without a temporary one being erected immediately. The court further fcecommends that detonating bombs bo placed at lighthouses and signal stations as a further means of attracting passing vessels. Ihe court aho points out that had a lifeboat been available* on the Pene&rrow aide of the harbour at least one life might been and trusts that steps will be taken to provide means of rescue in future.
