OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was held on Wednesday and Thursday, the following being present: Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), P. M'Kinlay, J. 11. Wilkinson, D. Borrie, G. Livingstone, J. Smith, IV. R. Brugh. J. Horn, M.P., and the Hon. D. T. Fleming. The department notified that an expert teacher was now available for a special class in Dunedin for partially deaf children, stammerers, and children with defective articulation. It was prepared to establish a class in Dunedin if a classroom was available for this purpose at one. of the city schools. —The Chairman said this was a desirable project, but unfortunately all the city' schools were crowded. Perhaps it would be possible to rent a room.—Tho matter was referred to the senior inspector, with power to act. Mr A. G. Melville was appointed to audit school committees’ accounts for the year ending February 28, 1921. The Department notified that grants had been sanctioned for the erection of an infant department at Anderson’s Bay, and for the re-erection of shed destroyed by fire at Musselburgh. Requests by the Awamangu School Committee were dealt with as follows. —For coil of wire-netting for garden; granted.. For stove for heating school and erection of coal shed at residence ; referred to architect for report. A request from the Berwick School Committee for a new tank was referred to the architect with power to act. Permission was granted to the Windsor School Committee to asphalt a portion of

the school glebe as a tennis court. An application was received from residents of Tomahawk for the re-opening of the school, there being now 13 children of school age and 12 attending other schools. —Referred to the senior inspector for report. With regard to the offer of residents of Glenledi to contribute £5 per child to supplement the capitation allowance in the event of the school being opened, it was decided to advertise for a teacher. It was decided to award junior national scholarships in accordance with the department’s list of those who have qualified. The Oamaru South School _ Committee wrote, pointing out that, had it not been for epidemics, the average for 1920 would have raised the grade of the school, and asking that, under the circumstances, the staff be increased.—To be informed that it was impossible to raise the grade. A request by- the Waitapeka School Committee for the erection of an additional classroom was referred to a sub-committee for report. Consideration of a report by tho \\ alton School Committee that the holly hedge on the east side of the school had been destroyed bv fire was held over. The head master at Lowborn wrote, reporting that additional school accommodation was needed. He also asked for permission to lease two acres of the school glebe at £5 per acre. —The architect, was requested to report on the first matter, and the request was sanctioned, subject to the committee’s approval.
