STRATHALLAN PASSENCERS’ REUNION.
Passengers who arrived by the Strathallan, 63 years ago, and their descendants—or at lea-t as many of them as could compass the journey—forgathered at the Early Settlers’ Hall on Saturday afternoon and evening -Of the actual passengers there were nearly 20 present—surely a record after 63 years —and the descendants brought up the total to about 50. These were photographed in two groups, the former for hanging in the Early Settlers’ Hall. The passengers are nearly all that are left of a hardy band of 270 pioneers who left the shores of the Old Country to brave the unknown and spread the British race in what were then practically the outposts of the Empire. Telegrams were received from Wellington and several other places, conveying congratulations and expressing regret at inability to attend the gathering. In the evening a social was held, the arrangements for which were in the capable hands of Mr R. F. Rmaill, as secretary. Mr Wm. Smaill presided, and gave a brief history of the landing. Dr Fulton, president of the Early Settlers’ Association, was also present, adding greatly to the pleasure of the company. Proceedings were opened by the singing of the Old Hundredth. After refreshments had been handed round the hall was cleared, and a most enjoyable function was brought to a close by a dance.
