WELTER-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. INVERCARGILL, January 3. The professional welter-weight championship of New Zealand between Murphy and Brown was fought in the Municipal Theatre, which was packed. Brown was more aggressive in a rather iame bout, which went the full distance, Murphy retaining the championship on points. The decision got a very mixed reception. In the amateur bouts, M’Cleary (Christchurch) beat Whittaker (Invercargill) in the heavy-weights, after a fast and interest ing contest. M‘Cleary was much superior in in-fighting. Bantam-weight.—Rowe (Dunedin) drew with Adams (Invercargill). Feather weight.—Sycamore f Invercargill' beat M'Dona.ld (Dunedin). Light-weight. -Mitchell (Dunedin) heal M‘Lenn (Invercargill). Welter-weight.— M Naughton (Dunedin beat Brown (Invercargill). In a special light weight contest, Cox (In vercargill) beat Brodie (Invercargill).
