WAITAHUNA SHOW
Following upon the Tuapeka Show, the aiinuil show at Waitahuna was a great success, being held in beautiful sunshine, with the turf in excellent order. Tho entries, as at Lawrence, showed a very considerable increase on those of last year, the
figures being as follow, last year’s figures in brackets: —Cattle, 19 (15); horses, 63 (70)| sheep, 164 (63) ; home industries and dairy produce, 58 (44); dogs, 10 (5). The attendance was also slightly better. The exhibit of cattle was unworthy of the district, few of the classes being entered for. The only animals deserving mention were some nice crossbred milkers; there were no Ayrshires in the show. The draught horses were of a good stamp, and tiie light horse i actions were well contested. This part of the show, taken all round, was similar to the previous day at Lawrence, as also were the competitions later in trie day. A large amount of interest centred i® the sheep owing to the presence of exhibit) from Mr Oliver Grey, Milburn, who was not a competitor at Lawrenoe. He most of the awards in the purebred classes, largely, no doubt, owing to the superiority of the confined paddocks at Milburn ovef the big runs of Tuapeka, from the point of view of bringing the sheep out. Th* display as a whole w T as very good, the best yet seen at a Waitahuna Show. The judge (Mr J. Miller) considered the first prizd Border Leicester ram a well-woolled typical sheep, showing good constitution, while tha class as a whole was above the average. In the Romney Marsh exhibits the charm pion ram and first prize ewe hogget, which was also awarded tho championship tot aged ewes, were good sheep. The ewe hogget was particularly well woolled, and typical of the breed. The crossbreds Mr Millet considered particularly good, worthy of special mention, having fine, sound, densa wool. The ladies of the district showed greater interest in the home industry sections than had their neighbours the previous day, the butter exhibits having more than doubled and the other classes being well contested. Miss Kempshell, who acted as judge, considered the display an excellent one, quite up to standard. The prize list was as follows: DRAUGHT HORSES. Judges: Messrs R. Lochhead (Balclutha) and Alex.
