OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND. monthly report for August by the District Health Officer states that the total number of notifications. of infectious diseases for • the Otago and Southland Hospital districts -was 954; an increase of 146 cases as compared with the -figures for July. The following are the figures for each hospital district:— Waitaki Hospital District. —Scarlet fever 5, tuberculosis 1, measles 18, pneumonia 2. erysipelas 1. ' Otago Hospital District.—Scarlet fever 5, diphheria 7, tuberculosis 'll, measles 814, pneumonia 22, varicella 7, variola 11, enteric 1, erysipelas 2, lethargic encephalitis 1, pneumonio influenza 2, septicsemio influenza Vincent Hospital District.—Diphtheria 10, pneumonia 3. Southland Hospital District. —Scarlet fever 9, diphtheria 2, tuberculosis 1, measles 2, pneumonia 6, varicella 4, variola 4, septicaemia (unclassified) 1, lethargic encephalitis The following deaths have been reported by the various undertakers:— Otago Hospital District.—tuberculosis 10, cerebro-spinal meningitis 1, puerperal septicaemia 1, pneumonia 3, pneumonic influenza 1, septicaemic influenza 1, measles 3. Southland Hospital District.—tuberculosis 1, pneumonia 1, pneumonio influenza 1, diphtheria 1, septiiasmia 1. Wallace Hospital District.—Tuberculosis 1 Scarlet Fever. —The figures hhow a decrease of 20 cases, as compared with last month. .. Diphtheria.—A decrease of 18 cases compared with last month's figures. Sixty-four swabs were taken for bacteriological examination. Tuberculosis. —A decrease of eight cases compared with the returns for July.' Measles. —An increase of 202 eases on the figures for last month. Pneumonia. —An increase of 11 compared with last month's figures. Enteric.—One case occurred at Dunedin.
