WEEK'S MINING NEWS

September 7. Shareholders in the Waihi Gold Mining Company received a dividend of Is per share on September 1. This makes the 103 th dividend, and brings up the total amount distributed to £5,251,681 Os Bd. Shareholders on tho colonial register receive about half the total amount ot the dividend just paid—viz., £10,463 lis. During the fcur-wcekly period ended July 10, 1920, the following work was done:—At No. 12 level, Dreadnought lode, east of No. 4 shaft crosscut, varied in width from ISin to sft, and assay value from 32s Gel to 60s lOd pe?: ton. On the north side, at 323 ft, the drive penetrated quartz for 12in. At No. 11 level, the drive on Martha lode, east of j_>ath north-west crosscut, at 246 ft, a leader 6in wide in south wall assayed 305 s 7d per ton. Another leader Gin wide, crossing the drive at 260 ft, assayed 13s 7d per ton. In the south section, Moore winze was sunk to 42Jftj assay value at 20ft was 2s 3d per ton. At No. 10 level, the Empire lode, north section, west cf Soldier's crosscut, the lode was crosscut at 182 ft, full width 18ft. It was sampled in four equal sections, measuring from the south wall. The first Oft averaged 35s per ton, and the remaining 9ft 3s per ton. East of Soldier's crosscut the level wa<3 heightened from 40ft to 60ft; truck samples from this work assayed 403 9d per ton. In the drive on the Martha lode, east of Cow Pass, there is 12in of quartz 'assaying 44? 6d per ton. .The closing down of the Progress and Energetic mines (says the Greymouth Star) has been decided upon by tho management. This has been . found necessary owing to: the scarcity, of miners on the field, coupled with the high cost of miniiig materials.

1 September 10. The following cablegram has been sent to the head office of the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Company, London : No. 3 leveL Mary lode: The drive east has been advanced 9ft, making a total of 78Sft. At,7B7ft east the lode is 96in wide, giving an assay value of £8 10s Gd a ton. Both walls are exposed. No. 7 winzo is down 16ft. Assays from the level to 9ft down average £2 5s Id per ton, for a width of 47in. .The walls are not exposed. No. 4 level, Mary lode: No. 7 rise has been advanced 29ft, making a total of 119 ft above the level. Assays from 80ft to 106 ft up average £2 2s lid a ton over a width of. 45in. The south wall is_ exposed. No. 5 level Mary lode: No. 7 winze has been advanced 10ft, making a total of 55ft. Assays from 41ft to. 51ft average 123 4d a ton for a width of 51in. The walls are not exposed. No 6 'level, Mary lode: The drive east has been, advanced 41ft, making a total of 771 ft. Assays from 722 ft to 759 ft average £1 5s a ton for a width of 79m. _ The walls are not exposed. No. 8 level, Empire lode: The drive has been advanced 81ft, making a total of 1213 ft in country rock.

September 11. . The following advice has- been received from the attorney of the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand, Limited: " Crushing returns for August for Consolidated Group.—Progress: Crushed 550 tons, value £576; working expenses £1586, development £24. Blackwater: Crushed 1493 tons, value £3574; working expenses £3106, shaft £571, "development £299. Blackwater mines reef intersected on No. 9 level;/assay value 16dwt over a width of 33in. Shaft sunk during month 31ft, now 152 ft below No. 10 level. A reef was struck in the Millerton mine at Waiuta a week ago in a drive off the shaft at a depth of over 300 ft (reports the Inangahua Times). This was small when first encountered, but it carried good gold, the assay value giving as high as 2oz to the ton. Develonments in the Xeep-it-Dark mine have disclosed a reef in No. 9 level which is also showing good gold.

September 13. The-manager of tho Rising Sun mine reports that the north drive has been driven 14ft, making a total of 30ft from the end of the stope. The width of the reef is 15in. It is of a rubbly nature, and the "assay value is £l7 10s a_ ton

The managing director of the Hauraki mines (Mr W. H. Argall) reports that the mine has now been unw&tered. He has inspected the various workings and found them in fairly gcod condition. They will now be thoroughly cleared, and operations carried out on Legge's reef below the 220 ft level in the endeavour to find the lost run of gold. 4-t the 4Coft level it is the intention to prospect below the level on the several places where gold was seen before the mine was last stopped. The report also suggests a plan of operations for testing other parts of the mine.
