FEDERAL POLITICS.
(By Cable.) • • MELBOURNE, September 11. In tbe House of Representatives Mr Hughes fell foul of the Country Party, and his display of temper may possibly lead to future complications. Mr M'Wif* liams. Leader of the Country Party, objected to the expenditure of £500,000 on the Queensland timber enterprise without consulting Parliament. _ Mr Hughes bitterly attacked Mr M'Williams, accusing him of coveting the Ministerial benches, adding that Mr M'Williams had allied himself with Mr Ryan, whom Dr Mannix had described as the greatest Sinn Feiner of all. Mr Gregory, Deputy Leader of the Country Party, and a former Minister, admonished Mr Hughes, threatening that, irrespective of the consequences, his vote would go to depose him at the earliest opportunity if there was ever a repetition of the incident. ;: A vote taken on a motion to extend the debate, as a. test of the feeling of -the House, resulted in the Government winning by 29 votes to 27, the Country and Labour Parties voting together. &■
