SYMPATHY AND PROTESTS. LONDON, August 15. The Irish Self-determination League held a demonstration in Trafalgar square. It carried a resolution demanding the removal of the ban on Archbishop Mannix's liberty. Dr Mannix was not present.

NEW YORK August 16. Resolutions denouncing the British Government and Mr Lloyd George for refusing to allow Archbishop Mannix to enter Ireland were carried at a mass meeting of 15,000 in Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. A meeting of 5000 at Montreal also denounced the British authorities' attitude in vigorous terms. London, August 17.

The Irish Hierarchy, in a collective protest regarding the treatment of Dr Mannix. say that Dr Mannix only used his right as a citizen of the Empire to criticise the- conduct of the Government and to set forth fearlessly in plain, dignified language the claims of Australian democracy and the rights of their own people in Ireland.

In the House of Commons Mr Lloyd George, replying to a question, said the Government would not remove the restrictions on Dr Mannix's movements, but it was prepared to give every assistance to his mother to visit - him in England.
