PRICE OF NEWSPRINT.

(By Cable.) ATTEMPT AT CONTEOL FAILS. "■'>- OTTAWA, April 6. The Supreme Court has decided that the Board of Commerce has no power to control the price or supply of newsprint paper, which is now selling in Canada at 80 dollars per ton, while the export price is 120 dollars per ton. Far-reaching results of the newsprint question are contained in the decision of the Supreme Court of Canada upholding the refusal of Messrs Price Brothers' mill to obey the orders of the Government. The judgment is interpreted • to mean the end of Government control. The judges decided that newsprint is not a necessity of life, which the Board of Commerce claimed it was. . The decision is considered as favouring the Australasian papers' supply of newsprint. Probably all the paper companies will now defy the orders of the Commerce Board as- regards the shipment of paper, and it is their declared policy to take care of the Australasian market as much as possible. However, it is possible that the Government may later retaliate by placing an export duty on paper which would adversely affect Australasia.
