Holidays are not eo common in the United States as they are in New Zealand. In a letter to a friend, a Masterton resident who js touring America, says: "The hours of work here are generally 54 per week. There are no half-holidays, and holidays are very rare. Christmas Day and Independence Day are the only two observed by aIL" On account of the acute shortage of coal in Napier, says the Hawke's Bay Herald, sawdust is being burned in some of the fishing trawlers operating off the bay.
