V Saturday. During the week an official farewell visit was paid Dunedin by the Governor-General and Lady Liverpool. They arrived on Wednesday afternoon by the first express, and were anet by the Mayor, Colonel MacDonald, and a number of the staff, also" a guard of honour composed of the High School Cadets. After their Excellencies nad been welcomed they proceeded to Dr and Mrs Lindo Ferguson's residence, Anderson's Bay, whoso guests they were while staying here. On Thursday a luncheon party was given by Mr and Mrs John Roberts at their residence, Littlebourne, the guests of honour being the Governor-General and Lady Liverpool. The table was prettily decorated with pink flowers. Besides the host and hostess and their Excellencies there were present Mr and Mrs James Roberts, Mr and Mrs John Cook, Dr and Mrs Pitchett, Dr and; Mrs Lindo Ferguson, Mrs George Roberts,and Mr Hamilton'. -'

A civic and farewell reception was given in the Art Gallery on Friday afternoon, when an address was presented to his Excellency the Governor-General by his Worship the Mayor, Mr Begg. Another presentation was made by the Red Cross Society in the form of a scroll on green leather worked by a wounded soldier in the hospital. The presentation was made by Rev. Bryan King. Lady Liverpool received a bouquet from the members of the Patriotic Association, preeented by Miss Downie Stewart. During the reception some delightful music was rendered by Flint's Band. The hall was decorated with flags and ferns. On Thursday evening Mra Oldham gave a bridge party in honour of the Miwes Sargood, who leave shortly for England. Some present were Mesdames Cheeseman, Wei gall (Sydney), Graham, Sargood (2), Bridg.eman, K. Ulrich, J". Sise, Stock. Kempthorne. A dinnea- party was given by Mrs Charles Rattray at her residence, Anderson's Bay, on Friday evening in honour of her Excellency Lady Liverpool. The hostess received in the drawing room, being attired in a soft white spotted tulle gown, with bodice and skirt swathed with a. very pale shad© of powder blue satin. The Women's Christian Temperance Union is holding a convention in Wellington this week, and the 100 delegates attending were accorded a civic reception on Wednesday evening by the acting Mayor (Cr Frost). Mrs Crabbe, the vice-president, is chairwoman for the conference, as Mrs Don is on her way to England to attend the World'© Convention. Much interest attaches to the meeting, and at the reception greetings were extended the delegates from various organisations, including the Y.W.C.A., the Y.M.C.A., the Order of Reehabites, the Women's National Council, and others. At the opening of the W.C.T.U. Convention on Thursday the Rev.. J. Dawson,, of the Now Zealand Alliance, spoke, to members, and gave some experiences of his recent trip to America. He told the delegates that when each American State sent_ two statues of its great men to be set up in tho oapitol only one State included that of a woman. This was Illinois, which includes Chicago, the stronghold of the liquor trade, and yet this State sent as one of its greatest citizens a statue of Frances Willard, the founder of the W.C.T.U. He also said that the name of Frances Willard was still spoken of as one of the three great names in America, the others being Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The Mayoress, Mrs J. P. Izard, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs Elgar, in Featherston, for the past two months, has returned to Auckland. Mr and Mrs Carey Hill (Christchurch) are staying at the Grind. Mro and Miss Wynn Williams, who haiv© been visiting relatives in Christchurch and other parts of the South Island, are back again in Auckland.
