WAIROA (Hawke's Bay).
February 24.—The reopening of the schools, both public and private, deferred on account of the outbreak of influenza, took place on Thursday, the 19th inst. Confliderable difficulty is being experienced in staffing the various public schools, and several vacancies still exist throughout this district.
Railway.—lt is reported that _ instructions Siavo been issued to proceed with the proposed railway line from Wairoa to Waikokopu; but tho difficulty of obtaining *ither labour- or material renders it problematical whether tho work will be com-
pleted within the estimated 18 months or not. Not much progress is being made on the Wairoa-Fraserton section of the Napier-Wairoa-Gisborne railway, the want of labour and material being acutely felt. Sanitation.—The local Borough Council and Health Officer have been carrying out a crusade against untidy and dirty premises, and these cases, with a large number under the Noxious Weeds Act, gave the Magistrate's Court an extra amount of local interest. In almost " •" ,, '~-" ' ,rr, vo inflicted. General. —The contract for improvements to the school grounds has been almost completed, and the grass is coming away well. The grading and levelling have wonderfully improved the portion taken in hand. A further contract is being arranged for to lay down the assembly ground. Some very fine potato crops are reported, and some very big potatoes recorded. Prices to the consumer are still high.—Chaff to-day is bringing £lB a ton.
