SWIMMING. Ross (the American) was defeated for the first time in Australia in the Half-mile Championship of Victoria. Beaurepaire beat the American by 40 yards in 12min 8 4-ssec. Ross attributed his defeat to tho rough water and the rope turns in the St. Kilda Baths, to which hois not accustomed. NEW INTERMEDIATE RECORD. CHRISTCHURCH, January 29. Norman Baichclor, swimming in the 100 yards boys' trial event to-night, broke the New Zealand intermediate record by 2. 3-ssec, covering the distance in 64 l-ssec. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. OKRISTOHURCH, January 30. Ihe selectors of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association have made the following selections of representatives for the -various distances at the New Zealand championship meeting, to bo held in Auckland:—Boys' Intermediate 100 Yards, 220 Yards, and 880 Yards, N. S. Batchelor and E. Low; Girls' Intermediate (all distances), Misses G. Sb-,nd and K. Brisced: Men's 100 Yards and 220 Yards, C. Atkinson- Men's 100 Yards, R, B. Wheoley. ATJCEIAND, February 1. At the Leandor Akarana Gala the 100 Yards Ladies' Championship of Auckland was won by Miss Violet Walrond in lmin 13sco, or 2-ssoo under tho New Zealand record. Miss LL'ian lloeft, who was second, just touched the record.
CRICKET. LOCAL MATCHES. Albion defeated Carisbrook B on Saturday. Carisbrook made 207 and 47. Albion's first innings totalled 119. Their second strike they-scored 241 for the loss of three wickets, M'Farlane (97), Shepherd (74). Carisbrook A had a three point win against St. Kilda, The latter, who had scored 148 in their first innings were dismissed for 52 in their second attempt. Carisbrook A scored 182 and 20 without the loss of a wicket. Christian Brothers had an easy win against Dunedin. The former made 247 for 7 wickets. Dunedin could only respond with 88 and 110. Grange had a three point win against Mornington. Grange, in the first innings, scored 76.. and in the second innings put together 204 for 6 wickets,- the feature of the play being 113 not out by Keast. Mornington's totals were 150 and 60. In Second Grade matches Grange defeated Albion by an innings and 73 runs. St. Kilda defeated Carisbrook by 1 wicket 39 runs. Mornington A defeated Mornington B by 101 runs. In the Third Grade contest Grange defeated Christian Brothers. NEW SOUTH WALES v. VICTORIA. SYDNEY, January 26. Playing against Victoria, New South Wales in the first innings made 521 runs (Andrews not out 247, RatclifFe 21). Andrews gave an excellent display of forceful, safe cricket throughout his innings. He batted for 299 minutes. Bowling Analysis.—Carlton, three for 140; Armstrong, one for 83; Ryder, two for 92; Shea, two for 105; Park, one for 17. Victoria have lost one wicket for 62 runs when rain stopped play. ' Next day Victoria, against New South Wales, lost three wickets for 79 (Mayne, not out, 44, Ransford 22) when rain stopped play. Victoria in the first innings made 245 runs (Mayne 82, Carlton 39, Armstrong 48). Bowling .Analysis.—Norman, 4 for 36; Hendrey, 1 for 43; Macartney, 1 for 62; Kelleway, 3 for 43; Mailey, 1 for 46. Victoria, in their second innings, scored 188 (Park 65, Slhea 23, Ransford 13). Bowling Analysis.—Norman, 3 for 56; Hendry, 7 for 34. New South Wale* won by an innings and 88 runs.
QUEENSLAND v. A.I.F. TEAM. Playing against the A.I.F. team, Queensland in the first innings made 146 runs (Oxcnham 50, Farquhar 31). The A.I.F: team, in their second innings, made 319 for the loss of five wickets and declared their innings closed (Collins 135, Gregory 39, Taylor 67!. When the match against the A.I.F. was abandoned as a draw, owing to rain, Queensland in the second innings had lost six wickets for 144 (CV Thompson 55). AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. . AUCKLAND, January 29. The match between Wellington and Auckland commenced in perfect weather on a fast wicket. Wellington, batting first, made a poor showing against the slow bowling of Smith. The only batsmen to make a stand were Dind (34) and Burton (23, not out). The opening pair, Dind and Baker, carried the score to 4-5 before the latter was caught in the out field. After that the wickets fell fast until Burton appeared with the score at five for 88 after 90 minutes' play. Burton and Lambert played a good partnership until just before lunch, when Lambert started to hit out and was caught in the long field. His successor failed to see an over out. When the adjournment was taken the score was 116 for seven wickets. The captain of the visiting team, Brice, was indisposed, and was unable to bat, and it was decided to keep a place for him, the visitors batting- one short. Aldersley, the new batsman, after lunch failed to score, being clean bowled by Smith. Wagstaffalso failed to score, the innings closing for 118, Smith finishing up a fine" bowling performance, taking eight wickets for 55. 'Hemus and Horspool opened the batting for Auckland. When the score had reached 7, Hemus was clean bowled by Lambert. Lusk followed, and the total was carried to 31, when he was bowled by Lambert. Smith then became the partner of Horspool, and 37 was on the board when he was bowled by M'Girr. Sneddon filled the vacancy, and a good stand was made, the score being 108 when Sneddon was given -out leg before to Lambert. Dacre followed, and the total was 162 when he was caught by Baker, off Lambert. R. Garrard was the next batsman, and the board showed 206 when he was bowled by Aldersley. Anthony partnered Smith, and after two runs had been l added Anthony was clean bowled by Aidersley. Rountree followed, and was bowled the next ball by Aldersley. Player then joined Smith and the score was taken to 223, when the latter was stumped by Condliit'e off Aldersley. Smith had made 86, and had been at the wickets for two hours and a-half. Coatefc was the last man. Player hit Aldersley to the long-on boundary and they attempted to get two runs. The ball was returned smartly, and Coates was run out.
January 30. The Plunket Shield match concluded today, Auckland winning by nine wickets. The weather was fine, and the wicket in good order. Baker and Dind opened Wellington’s second innings, and only 1 was scored when Dind was bowled by Coates, Lambert followed, and at 26 he returned the ball to Smith, who held it. M'Girr joined Baker, and one run was added when the former was given out Ibw to Coates. Burton was the newcomer, and the total had reached 64 when he was stumped by Rountree. Condliffe then partnered Baker, and at 101 he played one from Smith on to the wicket. Schrader was the next batsman, and at 125 he was given out Ibw to Coates. Wagstaff followed,, and Baker was caught almost immediately by . Hemus at mid on, the score being unaltered.Aldersley and Wagstaff carried the total to 151 when the latter was bowled by Coates. Gedye filled the vacancy, and at 160 Aldersley was caught by Lusk in the slips. Samuels, the substitute for Brice, was the last man, and after Godye had hit a six off Smith. h e _ was caught by Player at mid oft'. The innings closed for 166. Hemus and Horspool opened the Auckland second innings, and the total was 40 when Horspool was caught by Wagstaff in deep field. Lusk and Hemus carried the score to 50, and stumps were drawn.:

It was agreed that Manawatu should enter into negotiations with Poverty Bay for a date for a match for the Hawke Cup, and to advise it that it had a right to inscribe its name on the Heathoote-Williams Shield. The Chairman (Mr F. C. Raphael) referred to the deep sense of loss felt by cricketers at the death of Lord Plunket, and moved that a letter be forwarded to Lady Plunket, expressing the council's heartfelt and eincere sympathy with her and the members of her family in thsir irrevocable loss. The motion ■was carried. At a meeting of delegates to the council it was decided not* to play North v. South Island match this year. In the match against Queensland Victoria in the first innings made 321 (Ransford 115. Keating' 35, Armstrong not out 86). Rowling analysis: Marsden, three for 86; Mandrew, four for 60; Hornabrook, one for 40; Fletcher, one for 55; Anderson, one for 67; Queensland have lost four wickets for 54. In a match against New South "Wales the A..1.F. team's first innings realised 255 (Gregory 122, Lampard 45, Trinnery 32, Dooker 38). New South Wales lost three wickets for 183 runs (Bardsley 60, Hendrey 85). WRESTLING. Stetcher defeated Caddoek for the world's heavy-weight -wrestling championship in 2hr 30min ssec. BOXING. Depunthieu, who strained his right wrist fighting Taney Lee on December 23, developed blood poisoning, and his hand had to be amputated.
