AUCKLAND TRADE UNIONS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, January 27. A scheme for the eentraiisa/tion of the activities of the 22 trade unions opei-ating in Auckland has been proposed in a report prepared by a committee representing the unions concerned. It is stated that under the present system of separate secretaries, and separate offices, little or no organisation is done, and a considerable amount of overlapping occure. The committee estimates that at present the lowest possible annual cost of administering trade union affairs in Auckland is £7OOO, with no provision for organisig work- The estimated annual cost of the secretarial and office work under the suggested scheme of centralisation, including an efficient office staff, and eight organisers continually at work, Is about £3OOO. This would mean a saving of about £4OOO, if, as suggested, that in addition to the usual office assistance, a general secretary, an accountant secretary and eight organ isens should be appointed. The weekly half-holiday at Balclutha has been ohanged from Wednesday to Saturday.
