OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. The steady rain which commenced to fall shortly after midday'on Thursday prevented a commencement being made in the interprovincial match between Otago and Southland (timed to start at 2 o'clock), till 20 minutes past 3. The rain had then cleared off, leaving- the wicket slow and easy. Southland, however, made a very poor showing, most of the batsmen preferring to let the ball hit the bat, rather than lay the wood on the ball. Torrance and A. W. Alloo were the opening bowlers for Otago, and the left-hander (Torrance) finished up with the excellent average of seven wickets for 21 runs. There was practically only one bit of interesting play while the Southland men were at the wickets, and that was towards the end of their innings, when the slow bowler (BeebyJ had nine runs hit off him —the most expensive over of the innings—but Galland (a difficult chance) and C. Alloo both missed catching Dixon in this over. Southland's score for an hour's batting .totalled 35, and the whole innings only lasted an hour and 18' minutes. Otago started their innings at 5 o'clock. Eckhold and Westbrook were the opening batsmen, the bowling being taken up bv Fogo (a fast bowler) and the ex-Otago and ex-Canterbury representative. (D. M'Beth). Both batsmen played confidently, thoutrh Fogo troubled Westbrook a bit. Eokhold earned a round of applause for a fine offdrive off M'Beth to the fence- for 4. Twenty runs had been registered at the end of 20 minutes' play. M'Beth. was now bowling well, coming in from the off, and the scoring slowed down. When he had scored 9 Westbrook gave a hard chance to Hamilton, at point, off M'Beth, the fieldsman failing to hold the ball. With the score at 23 Kavanagh came on in nlace of Pdgo, and Westbrook nicely pulled his second delivery to leg for 4. With the score at 33 Eckhoid was nicely stumped by Bogue off M'Beth after half an hour's play. A. Alloo came in and was well caught off his first ball by Poole, at second slip Smith was the incomer, and after scoring 4 was run out. The Otago captain (Galland) was the next man In, but after a couple of overs be was bowled by M'Beth with a ball which kept low and struck the batsman's pad. Galland scored 4—a powerful pull off a no-ball by Kavanagh. With the score at 66 Dixon replaced Kavanagh, and had 10 hit off his first over. West? brook's time had now come, and playing too late to M'Betlv he was olean bowled. L. Chadwick oame in, and Poole had a turn at the bowling crease, the score then standing at 79. The. new bowler got C. Alloo in his first over. Raines talcing a hot shot at square leg. L. Chadwick brought up 100 with a 6 off M'Beth. the lefthander's over costing 14 runs, all to -Chadwick.
The cricket match between Otago and Southland was continued at the Carisbrook Ground yesterday afternoon in what may be .described as "patchy" weather. In the morning it ..looked' as it cricket was out of the question, but matters mended in the afternoon, and the resumption of the match at 2 p.m., in the presence of a rather limited number of spectators, wae attended with better conditions than might have been expected. Of necessity, the wicket was not of the best after the rainfall. Southland had scored 55 runs in the first innings, and Otago had put together 109 for the loss of six wickets. It was at this point that the match was resumed. L. Chadwick and F. C. Hutchison continued to bat for Otago, with M'Beth bowling. M'Beth, in his first over, disposed of Hutchison without that player adding to his score. O. Chadwick joined his brother, and the pair carried the score to 125, when L. Chadwick was bowled by M'Beth. Torrance then joined C. Chadwick. and between them they raised Otago's total to 132. Torrance was bowled at that stage after making TO. Beeby, the last man, filled the gap, and before the two parted company Otago s total ecore was 144.
Southland, with a deficit of 89 runs, started the second innings at 3.30. G. M'Beth and V. Raines were tho first to face the bowling of Torrance and A. W. Alloo, who were retained to the end, and put up a very good performance. Raines drew first blood for Southland with 2. The scoring was slow, and the two batsmen hung together for a considerable time. Southland had scored 15 by careful play when M'Beth had to retire in favour of A. Hamilton, and Raines was very shortly afterwards clean bowled by Alloo. Poole was the next comer, but he did not last long. Camm joined Raines, and the score had been raised to 26 when the former was bowled by Torrance. Kavanagh was the next to face the bowling, but he fell a
victim to Torrance very soon afterwards. A. M'Beth followed on, but soon lost Hamilton, who retired with seven runs to his credit. The new man was Dixon, who was caught off Alloo's second ball without adding to the score. D. M'Beth did not last long, and like Dixon, retired without raising Southand's score. Up to this point the batsmen had been -very ohary of the bowling, but the next man, Fogo, played with much greater freedom. His life at the wicket was a short and a merry one. He hit out, and put a couple of fours together in a few minutes, finishing hiß career—for the time being—with nine—the highest score made for Southlend in the innings. The last man was Bogue, who quickly lost his partner, M'Beth. Southland's second innings resulted in a total of 42 rims. This left Otago the winners by an innings and 47 runs. PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON. CHRISTOHURCH, December 25. Play in the Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and Wellington was commenced at Hagley Park this afternoon in dull but fine weather. The wicket was hard. There was a large attendance. Wellington batted first, and at 5 p.m the score stood at 162 lor six wickets: — '' ~ December 26. A heavy south-west wind, with driving rain, completely spoiled the second day's play between Canterbury and Wellington. The match was resumed at 11 a.m., and Wellington were soon all out for 239 runs. Shortly after Canterbury started batting play had to be abandoned on account of ram. December 27. The Plunket Shield match Wellington v. Canterbury was continued in excellent weather. The rain yesterday did not affect the wicket. Dr Foster, owing to a professional call, was absent from the Canterbury team, and H. B. Whitta took his place. Blunt and Patrick resumed to the bowling of Brice and Garrod. Both played ooirfident cricket, and it was not till 96 appeared that a separation was effected, Patrick being caught by Garrod at point. Gray came in, but was dismissed by Lambert without scoring; and with his next ball the same bowler got Reese. He had hard luck in not bringing off the hat trick, Sandman just putting a ball out of his reach. The pair carried the score to 152, when Blunt, who had ccored 73 with very neat and well-placed shots, with only ono chance, went out Ibw to Garrod. • ■— , ~' Evans joined Sandman. The latter gave a chance in the slips, and a few minutes later sent one back to Lambert, xxis 30 was made in as many minutes. with his next ball, shifted Brunton s off stump. Thomas joined Evans, and they were still going strong at the luncheon adjournment. On thejresumption Evans added 2, and was bowled by Brice. Whitta was next man, and 200 soon appeared. Both played forceful cricket, and made the bowlin/look cheap. With 299 on, Hutchings was tried, and Whitta put his leg in front of his fdurth ball. The partnership had added 114. Read put on 14, and was then bowled by M'Girr. Runs came freely, but at 350 M'Girr got M'Ewin's wicket. Thomas played a ehanceless innings, and was accorded a fine reception on returning to the pavilion. . , . Wellington opened their second innings with M'Girr and Burton. With the score 1 at 13 M'Girr succumbed to a good length ball from Sandman, and 3 runs later Burton put his leg in front of pno from the same bowler. Baker partnered Wilson, and had put on 7 when a good ball from Read came across and shifted his leg bail. Dind and Baker imoroved matters, and at 47 M'Ewin relieved Sandman. The change camo off, for Baker lifted him to leg, and Blunt accepted the catch. Dind batted crisply, and Condliffe steadily, and runs came "slowly. At 71 Reese relieved M'Ewin, and boiled Dind, whose 31 was 47 minutes in the making. Reese sent down two maidens, and then Thomas bowled Condliffe with a v-uker. He had been in 39 minutes for 4 singles. Hutchings survived an appeal for lbw. but pulled the next round "to Evans. Brice made 2, and was lbw to Reese. Lambert was the newcomer, and livened things up. At 17 he gave Thomas a hot chance, which was not ac- ■ ccpted, and stumps were drawn with 97 on for eight wickets.
