EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING.

The forty-second annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute (Otago branch) was held in the Technical College on Saturday morning. Mr O. M’Kinnon, of Waiwera, presided. The annual report was adopted, without discussion, and it was announced that there was a credit balance of £IOO. The following office bearers, previously nominated, were elected : —President, Mr H. 0. Jones (St. Clair); vice-president, Mr J. MTL Miller (Green Island); secretary and treasurer, Mr T, Begg (Arthur Sttreet); librarian, Mrs Alexander; auditor, Mr K. H. Hunter; representatives on Committee of Management; Dunedin sub-branch —Misses Sullivan, Ralston, Mackenzie, Crawford, Messrs W. Phillips, O. A. S.tewart; Waitaki sub-branch—Messrs J. Ironside, W. Rodger: Bruoe-Clutha sub-branch —Messrs O. MTtinnon, L. E. Ellisson; Lawrence sub-branch, Mr H. L. Darton. As representatives at the annual conference, Wellington, there were elected: For Dunedin sub-branch —Messrs Eudey, Macdonald, and Hunter; Waitaki, Mr W. J. Rogers; BruceClutha, Mr Ellisson; Otago Central, Mr T. Beg g. The honorarium of the secretary-treasurer was fixed at £SO, and the retiring treasurer (Mr Hunter) was accorded a hearty vote of thankqs for his past services; credit being given to him for having been largely instrumental in, bringing about the present satisfactory state of the .finances. Votes of thanks were also accorded the other retiring officers. Mr H. O. Jones, of St. Clair, spoke on the dominion grading system and the extraordinary anomalies that existed as between the Otago teachers and those of, say, Auckland. . It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Ironside, “ That this meeting of teachers emphatically protest against the very apparent want of any uniformity in the standard by which the grading marks as _ between district and district, and especially between Auckland and this district, have been granted.” It was also resolved that Messrs Phillips and Hunter be appointed to place the facts and figures before the local inspector* within the next fortnight.
