SOUTHLAND WAR FUNDS

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO SOLDIERS. (From Otjr- Ovvn Correspondent.) INVEROARGILL, November 28.

For the past six months very many claims [ for financial assistance towards the purchase of clothing have been lodged with the Southland War Funds Association, and these have each been dealt with on its merits. In cases where the soldier's allotment has been used for the support of a dependent and the soldier on return has had no deferred pay to draw, and practically no cash, otherwise, his claim has been met in accordance with a scale of payments. A country representative at the meeting urged that every application should be referred back to "the district in which the. soldier resided for\ verification of the statements by councillors or branch secretaries. In support of this he stated that some were receiving grants who were not by any means in financial necessity. At the quarterly meeting of the Southland War Funds Association an animated discussion took place on the subject of mufti, grants. The 'Secretary sfcated-.that approximately 4969 men had • returned to the district. Of this number, 2202 had been assisted, leaving 2767 who had made no application.. Since the beginning of the year £]o,B£6 lis 4d. had been, paid out to assist returned soldiers and their dependents, a good portion" of this being'for mufti. A motion that- every returned _ soldier be gra'nted- an allowance ; for mufti, irrespective of his financial position, was lost in, favour of an amendment that the policy of the association; remain as at present until February (next quarterly meeting), the committee in the meantime to frame a definite proposal for recommendation to the council. This closed the discussion 1 , and one of the most heated debates that has taken place in ■ regard to the administration of the funds. Every member present had a voice on the matter, and a strong plea by the chairman for consistency even in inconsistencies effec-. tually met the situation.
