Under powers given by the Act of last" session local deputy public trustees have been appointed for several places. In a letter from Mr Adam Paterson (of the firm of Paterson and Barr)_ the writer, who is in London, said he was informed.by those connected with shipping that tha Otago Harbour had the worst facilities fop handling cargo of any port,, in the Dominion, and that the northern ports had 10 cranes to Otago's one, and that it would be well for this to be taken into serious consideration. * • At last week's meeting of the Dunedin' Chamber of Commerce the president (Mr J. B. Waters) said that by this Australian Government placing an embargo on tha export of rabbits-kins, thus artificially lowering the price, the fur manufacturer was enabled to get his raw material cheaper, and was competing unfairly with the New Zealand manufacturer. Mr H. M. Jones said the Australian manufacturer was putting a superior article on the market, and the Dominion manufacturer could not compete with them. The president said that about 1400 hands wore engaged in the fur manufacturing business, principally about Dunedin. This statement is declared by Dunedin manufacturers not to be' correct. Tt is claimed that the New Zealand manufactured article is of superior quality, and that the difference in price is very'slight, if any, in view of the quality. The skins turned down by New Zealand manufacturers are alleged to be sent to Australia, wher« thoy are made use of by Australian manufacturers,
