METHODIST SYNOD

The representative session of the Methodist Synod was opened in Octagon Hall on the 26th ult. by the Rev. B. P. Rothwell, who presided over a good number of delegates from various centies. * It was reported that the Rev. S. Werren had arrived in Balclutha. Mr King was appointed to Kaitangata home mission station; and expected to take up duty in due course. The Rev. S. Griffith applied for permanent ■ superannuation. Testimonies to Mr Griffith's worth and the esteem in which he was held were paid by Revs. T. W. Newbold, B. P. Rothwell, S. J. Peryman, and Mr Thompson (of Cavereham circuit). Regret was expressed at the retirement of Mr Griffith, and the application, which was owing. primarily to health circumstances, was granted. A suitable record of Mr Griffith's services was ordered to be placed on the minutes. Financial returns presented by Rev. J. Featherstono showed appreciable credit balance on total amounts in .district. Statistical returns were given by Rev. S. J. Peryman. Sunday school scholars were 2268 this year, against 2376 last year, with an average attendance of 1801. as against 1880 tho preceding year. Bible class members of young men and young women showed a slight decrease, also church membership. Other returns dealing with different departments of the Church life were presented, and some discussion ensued thereon. Subsequently business of a technical character was entered upon. Mr Dawson presented church property returns for tho district, and Sunday school matters came under review. Mr Raine was voted conference representative, with Mr Hopper substitute. In Sunday school returns presented by the Rev. S. J. Peryman a pleasing feature was the number of young people received into membership. A conversation on work of God was heartily entered into, and the Revs. C. Eaton, M. A. Rugby Pratt, S. Griffith. B. F. Rothwell, Messrs E. Rosevcare and J. Dawson took part. Sapper was kindly dispensed by the Central Mission friends, and the Synod adjourned until thi3 morning.
