Saturday evening. Last Saturday, evening Mr and Mrs Oldham gave a picture party and delightful supper afterwards at their residence in Stuart street. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs Black, Mr and Mrs Cheeseinan, Mr and Mrs Jas. Dunlop, Mesdames Cogun (Christchurch), M'Master, Geo. Roberts, Misses Neill, Mackerras. On Monday evening Mrs Riley gave a very enjoyable bridge party. Present were Mesdames Hilton, P. Fitchett, Cook, Black, A. Denniston, Misses Reynolds, Bell, Graham, Ulrich, Neill. On Wednesday Mrs Wallace (Roslyn) gave a email afternoon tea. There were present Mesdames Riley, Gall away. Leech, Hilton, Misses Rattray, Neill, P. Sise, Graham. On Tuesday evening Mrs Acton Adams gave a, small fox trot and jazz party at her residence (Melrose). Amongst those present were Colonel and Mrs Falla, Mr and Mrs Kain, Misses Stock, Douglas (2), Kempthorne, Cheessman, U. Rattray, Edmond, Messrs Sinclair, Sise, Dawson, Edmond, Captain Shcnnan, etc. Several members of the Pantomime Company were also present, end Mr Yates and Miss Dickenson gave an exhibition of dancing and some hints in various steps. During tho week a number of small afternoon teas have been given for Mr Cogan (Christchurch). On Saturday morning the foundation stone woe laid for the building of a, new free kindergarten, to be called the “ KelseyYaralla,” the site being in Trent avenue, between Leith and Clydo streets. The Albany Street School Band was in attendance, and, after the guests had assembled, played “The King.” Then Mr Axelsen opened the ceremony by offering a short prayer. Mrs R. Gilkison, president of tho association, addressed a few remarks to the company then asked Miss Kelsey, M. 8.8., to lay the stone, as she was the first secretary to tho association, and had served as a member of committee and os president with unsparing energy. Miss Kelsey then laid the

stone. After making a .few remarks as to the great benefit derived from the free kindergarten, Sir James Allen gave a short address, expressing much pleasure nt being al>lo to be present at the ceremony, and said Dunedin North had been waiting SO years for this kindergarten, but in spite of the lack of the splendid building they are going to have, most excellent work had been done all the time in such buildings as were possible to bo had. Amongst those present were Sir James and Lady Allen. Miss Allen, Mrs R. Gilkison, Mrs W. H. Reynolds, Mrs Ulrich, Mrs John Boss, Mrs George M'Lean, the Mayer (Mr Begs), Professor White, the Hon. J. Mr J. C. Marshall, Miss Cargill, and party have gone for a visit to Akaroa.

The Otago Boys' High School sports were held on Saturday at Carisbrook under most delightful weather conditions, the day proving warm and bright. A fairly large number of spectators were present. Afternoon tea for a small charge was served by iLigii School Girls, and everything went off most successfully.

Sister Mcore ; just arrived from England, is giving very interesting lectures to mothers in the Y.M.C.A. Hall. The lecture was aided by practical demonstrations. OAMARU, November 7. Mrs J. A. Sutton gave a very enjoyable little dance for young people at her residence, Tees street, last Friday evening. The weather was very unfavourable "for the Waitaki Boys' High School sports, which took place on the school grounds on Thursday. But the grounds being sheltered, the onlookers did not find it unpleasant. In the evening a large number of parents and friends of the boys' were entertained at the school. The first, part of the programme consisted of musical items. The second half was an athletic display, in the quadrangje, which attracted a large number of spectators. In th*? art studio was an excellent display of drawings by the boys. What with chemical experiments, etc., there was something to inteiest everyone. Later in the evening the gymnasium was cleared, and dancing indulged in by. the younger guests. Mrs and Miss Ward, who were tho guests of Mrs Humphries, havo returned to Dunedin. WELLINGTON, November 7.

An interesting visitor to Wellington at present is Miss Louise Mack. (Mrs Creed), who is giving lectures on her experiences as a war correspondent. Mis»» Mack baa a vivid personality, and has met so many interesting people that a conversation with her is like a tour among well-known places and personalities. Mrs Creed is related on her husband's side to Mr Prendergast Knight and Mr Henry Hall, of Wellington, and on Tuesday afternoon Mrs Hall gave an "At heme" to meet Mrs Creed. There were a largo number present, including Mrs W. F. Massey (who has recovered from her recent illness), Lady Ward, Mrs Sprott (wife of the Bishop), the Mayoress (Mrs J. P. Luke), Mrs F. Chapman, and other well-known people who were introduced to the distinguished visitor and enjoyed a few moments' conversation with her. Louise Mack was V.A.L\ as well as war correspondent, and she wore her uniform on this occasion. Mrs Hall VWaa in navy blue charmeuse embroidered in self-colour and finished with fringe. On Thursday Louise Mack was the guest of honour at the Pioneer Club, and members had the privilege of meeting her. Lady Findlay and Mrs A. B. Atkinson received in the absence of the president (Lady Stout), and Mrs Atkinson formally welcomed Miss Maok, who said a few words 1 to the members on how she became a war correspondent. Mrs J. P. Luke thanked Miss Mack, and also Bai.i a few words of welcome. Afterwards tea was served in the clubroom.

The good wishes expressed were particularly hearty, for Miss Halse is a great favourite, and her friends are very pleased at her engagement.

Lady Stout was a.lso hostess at a shower tea for Miss Lydia Field on Friday last, and again the bride to be had a number of dainty aifd pretty gifts from her friends. The parcels were kept unopened, and a competition of guessing their contents was held, and won by Miss Molineaux. Mrs Wallace M'Konzie helped Lady Stout in looking after tho tea on both occasions, and the rooms .were. decorated with beautiful flowers, many of which had been sent to Lady Stout by Lady Liverpool from Government House.

The Amateur Operatic Society staged the "Mikado" on Saturday night. The staging and dressing are both quite exceptional, and great praise is given to Miss Helen Gard'ner, of Dimedin, who plays Yum Yum.. On Saturday afternoon last the Countess of Liverpool went to Heretaunga and presented the trophies won during the week of the Provincial Ladies' iournament. Mrs Marchbanks and Lady Ward (wife of the piesident) received her Excellency. The tournament was conducted in beautiful weather, and has been most enjoyable. The winner, Miss Anderson, is a Christchuroh player, and she beat Miss Tweed, of Wellington. On the last occasion this was played (which was before the war) the positions wore reversed, and Miss Lucy Brandon, of this city, beat Miss Wood, of Christchurch. Among those who were present on Saturday was Miss Rattray, of Dunedin, president of the Ladies' Golf Union.

The marriage of Miss Merle Pollen, only child of Mr and Mrs Charles Pollen, of St. Stephen's avenue, Parnell, to Mr Alfred John Price, son of the late Mr A. H. Price and Mrs Price, Havelock Noith, was celebrated at St. Mary's Cathedral on Thursday afternoon of last week. A profusion of manuka- in flower, pink and white stocks, and Toses were used for the decorations, while in the archway was a large floral weddingbell. The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Macmurray, and Dr Thomas presided at the organ. The bride looked very charming in her gown of white* taffetas, embroidered in a design of tiger lilies in silk and silver thread. The foot of the skirt was held in with elastic, and the hem finished with a headed fringe; from the shoulders was draped a train of lovely' old lace lined with sl:ell-pink ninon; wieath of orange blossoms ani tulle veil were also worn. The bridesmaids—Miss May Eathbone, Miss Sydney Lusk, and Miss St. Hill (Ha-,vke's Bay) were alike in frocks of pale primrose taffeta, and wide sashes of a lovely shade of jade green, and large hats trimmed with flat feathers in palo primrose and jade green ribbon velvet' streamers. Bouquets of shaded- yellow flowers and jade green neckleta (the gift of the bridegroom) were also worn. The bride-

groom was attended by Mr Gordon Lyons, Mr Donnelly, and Mr Macky. After the ceremony a reception was hold by Hi© bride's parents at Manganui, the residence of Mrs Rathbono (cunt of the bride). The Italian band played cheerful music from outside in the grounds during the reception. When the bride went away she was wearing a coat and skirt of putty-coloured silk poplin and smtui black hat, with flowers in a like f,h>-de. The guests were received by Mr and Mrs Pollen, the latter wearing a smait fr«/ck of black crepe de chine, finished vitn black fringe, and toque of violet; Mrs RttUibone (aunt of th/3 bride,) black georgette, handsomely embroidei.ed, and small black hat; Mrs B. B. Lusk, mole-coloured taffeta with finthings of Oriental embroidery, and black hat; Miss Alice Lusk, mole charmeuse, with heavy silk fringe and embroideries, and black hat; Miss Olive Lusk, -=ax3-bluc charmeuse, with black silk fringe and femnrt black hat; JYhs3 Freda Rathbono, jade green georgette with embroideries, and large jade green hat. Amongst the guests were Mrs C. V. Houghton, Mrs Archie Clark, Mrs Howard Richmciid, Mr and Mrs Edward Anderson, Mr and Mrs Ernest Bloomfield, Mrs Col'oeck, Mr and Mrs Sidney Thome George, Miss Una Buddie, and Mrs E. Horton, etc. The next bride will ba Miss Una Holmes, and during the past week lea parties in her lionour have been given by Miss Mamie -Huckleton (Remuera), Miss Nancy Hanna (Victoria avenue), and Miss Ailsa Brown (St. btephen s avenue). Mrs E. D O'Rorke, with two of her sons and her only daughter (who, by tne way, is now grown up, and was presented at Court last season), have left for the south after a short stay in Auckland. Mr and Mrs Harry M'Cosh Clark and family have returned to Auckland after a stay of several years in London. Miss Ida Coleridge (Wellington) is at present in Auckland.
