The Cromwell Argus records a despicable theft from the grounds of the New Cemetery, where flowers and plants have been removed from several graves. A seam of bituminous coal has been uncovered on the farm of Mr Wm, Wells, at Maclennan, Catlins district (says the Balclutha Free Press). It has been pronounced by experts to be true coal, and the find differs from ether in the district in that the outcrop when uncovered has disclosed a seam fully 4ft thick. It lies near to the sea coast, and on a lower stratum than other coal bearing lands in th<» same vicinity, hence Mr Wells believes that he possesses a mine that will develop into something valuable. With reference to the opinion expressed that illuminations viewed from Napier towards the Kidnappers, and also in other parts of the dominion some weeks asro, was the Aurora Ausfcralis, Mr Clement Wragge declares that this was not as supposed.
