OAMARU MARKETS. (Fbom Oua Own Courespondent.) OAAMRU, September 20.

The stock market has not undergone any improvement so far as sheep generally are concerned. During the week northern buyers ■were entirely out of the market, and the sales were practically confined to local buyers, •who are not disposed to enter freely upon business in view of the backwardness of the si'.iso:.. and tho small growth of feed. At the ■weekly sale, though few sheep were offered, prices- showed a distinct drop, but this has not been reflected in sales by private treaty. Fat wethers are very scarce, and one line of 200 was sold at 435, while other business has been done at 45s and 47s 6d. A few sales of lambs for forward delivery have been made at 203, but the speculative spirit which has marked previous seasons at this time of the year is entirely absent, the reported cau3e of abstention being that last year's experience was distinctly unprofitable. A few lines of ewes and lambs have been sold for forward delivery at 20s 6d, all counted, and full-mouth ewes at 16s 6d. Other sales of sheep have been made at the following rates: —Store wethers, 355; good ewe hoggets, 28s and 295; mixed-sex hoggets. 23s and up to 27s 6d, according to quality; hill wether hoggets, 22s 6d.

There has been some movement in cattle. Most classes of fat cattle are exceptionally scarce, and sales of steers have been made up to £22, and of cows up to £l7. Sales_ of store cattle are reported at the following prices:—Fat and forward bullocks, £l6; four-year-old bullocks.. £l4; three-year-old' mixed sexes, £6 10s; mixed 18-months and two-year-old steers and heifers, £6 15s; yearlings, £2 10s- to £2 15s; calves, 30s.

SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (Fbom Our Own Correspondent ) INVERCARGTLL, September 20.

During the past week the stock market has remained) about on a par with the previous report, very little change having-taken place. The weather continues good, but the grass is very slow in making its appearance. At stock sales held during the week good yardings of sheep—both stores and fats—have been coming forward, and in most cases have met with a ready sale, the only lines that have eased up in value being inferior hoggets and small ewes. There is a really good demand for good hoggets and good store wethers. The cattle market remains about the same, with very little inquiry except for good four-year-old bullocks in forward condition. The demand for dairy cows has eased off slightly, as most dairymen have completed their herds. -Prices may be quoted: Fat Cattle.—Ox beef, £3 ss; heifer, 555; cow, 50s; extra prime bullocks, £2B to £3O; medium, £22 to . £25; unfinished, down to £l7; extra prime cows, £lB to £2O; prime, £l4 to £l6; unfinished, down to £l2; prime heifers, £2O to £22; prime, £l6 10s to £l7 10s; unifinished, down to £ll 10s. The death of Mr Thomas Brown was deepay felt not only by his own relatives and friends but by tie whole community. The following resolution was passed by the board:—"The directors desire to place on record their

heartfelt sorrow and regret at the death of their chairman, Mr Thomas Brown. They realise that the company has sustained) a heavy loss. Tho late Mr Brown's intimiato knowledge of the business, his ripe experience, combined with his rare tact and judgment, 25roved invaluable at all times. Apart from their recognition of his high business qualities, his sterling as a man and as a citizen had entirely won their respect and esteem. His place on tho board will not be easily filled." The directors appointed Mr W. Jeffery to fill the vacant position. This was felt to be all the more desirable because of some important financial matters which required attention at the time. The directors reported having purchased the freehold of the Princes street site at a reasonable price. This landl was held under a lease expiring in 1956, with no valuation for improvement's; thus had the company not purchased the property, buildings costing over £15,000 would at the end of the lease pass into the possession of the landlord without compensation. Tho purchase money includes not only 'the land but the owners' reversionary interest in the buildings.

The balance &heet was adopted. Mr W. Jeffrey was re-elected a director, and Mr D. Crawford auditor.
