THE SEAWARD SWAMP.
QUESTION OF DRAINAGE. (Fbom Our Own Cokkeisfondent.) WELLINGTON, September 18.
For some timo Mr Anderson has been asking the Government to undertake the drainage of the Seaward swamp, the largest swamp in the South Island, stretching from the Mataura River to Bluff Harbour. _ In the House to-day he asked when the Minister of Lands proposed to send a drainage engineer to make a survey of the place. The settlers in the district were most anxious to know what prospects there were of this work being done within a reasonable period. Mr Guthrie replied that while he had been in Southland he had promised that as soon as a drainagei engineer could be spared one would be sent to make surveys of the swamp. This had been decided on the report the engineer had made as to the prospects of -successfully draining that swamp. Unfortunately there were two large works already on hand, and the engineer had to give all his timo to them. As £Oon as possible an engineer would be sent to make tho initial survey of this swamp.
